We spent the weekend (Thursday - Monday actually) in Siljansringen in

Dalarna in Sweden. This place is a VERY old meteorite crater. This weekend

is at least as important as Christmas here - it was Midsummer!

We started of by having 2 seminars at a Down Syndrome camp, our kids joined

the children at the camp (one of their friends was there) with the

activities they where doing and my husband and I talked to parents about

Communicating Partners. Afterwards we had a barbecue together, then we went

to a camping site (just as half Sweden and a lot of other tourists).

The next day was midsummer eve, we started of by visiting the Japanese

garden in Leksand and Xerxes through our water bottle into the pond. The we

had the pleasant job to by things for a strawberry cake - just like all the

thousands of tourists! The Swedish strawberries were out so I bought

Belgian instead. Then back to the place for the camp, where some had stayed

behind to celebrate midsummer even though the camp was over. Some new had

arrived that was going to the camp this week. We had classic midsummer

feast with raw herring and potatoes (with sauce and things too) and the

strawberry cake as desert.

A little rest and then of to a close village (Siljansnäs, not Leksand - too

many people there) to watch the Midsummer Pole go up and dance a little

before the rain came (it always does). We barbecued for dinner (and had the

rest of the herring).

Midsummer day was exploring for us. We went to Rättvik just north of

Leksand. First we went to an place were it was easy to spot fossils.

Zacharina was very exited! Then we went to an old spring, just beside it

was a stream with not to cold water so the kids took their cloths of and

went out. A short stop to look at an old stone for offering. The kids left

a coin each - you never know ;-). And at last we went up a tower at a vista

point to overlook the crater lake, Siljan. Of course we counted the steps, 143.

Sunday - most campers left the camping site, it became quite empty. We took

a trip to a Internet friend in Gagnef and then went back for dinner at the

Down syndrome Camp and meet all the new arrivals.

Monday - We took down the tent and checked out from the camping site. A

little shopping at Clas Olsson in Insjön (took a beautiful detour to get

there). And then up to the Birch-mountain (Björkberget) in Siljansnäs and

round a long nature-trail. Xerxes LOVED it. In the evening it was time for

two new seminars and then we home again.

I will try to put some pictures for you in the photo-section.

Yours

lillasyster Majken född 030513

Right now? 15 Celsius (59 F), but a few days every summer it gets hot, 30 C

(86 F). It has been a cold summer so far :-(

Sounds like a lot of fun! Our 4th of July is next week, of course a really big

deal. However, I will be working (I am a nurse), so won't be celebrating with

my family.

I have to laugh, those temperatures sound wonderful to me! We have consistently

been in the high 80's to low 90's. Our humidity level hasn't been below 90% in

a week.

Take care

Welcome to the group. Sweden is a facinating country. Your Christmas

customs and May Day celebrations are really interesting. i have been trying

to learn some Swedish for about a year (I like to dabble in languages). It

is kind of hard. I am amazed at some of the words. Like a barn is a

child. Of course in old English, a barren is a child too. I like the names

of some of your foods--westkoastsullad and hjorton with glass.

We live in the extreme Southern Midwest U.S., about 100 miles north of where

the Deep South begins so we are a combination of Middle Western/Southern

culture and heritage and a balance between prairiebilly and hillbilly.
