Guest guest
what are the worst comments you've gotten? I've got two that I'll never forget... The first when Nic was about 8 months old. I was grocery shopping (in Seattle, which I thought was a progressive, educated city) and a woman came up to me panicked and said, " what is wrong with your baby? " I had been looking at the shelf so I fully expected to turn and see him bleeding to death, but he was just sitting there, his contented little self... And I asked her, " what do you mean? " and she said, " I've always wanted to know what was wrong with people who looked like that... " - what, content?? I just walked away. The second happened 3 years ago, when Nic was 7. We were at Chuck E Cheese for Nic's birthday and this older woman came up and said to me in front of my parents, " children like THAT shouldn't be allowed in a place like this. " and she pointed at my son. I thought my dad was going to hit her, literally. Well, I agreed, why should my kid have to suffer through sub-par food and rude people like that. We stayed, but we haven't been back since... Sandy Love Monona, WI

Guest guest
When I was questioning the teacher about the schools choice of an aid for him (she has never worked with children), the teacher said, " well, we didn't exactly have people lined up around the block for the job " . I was so shocked that I didn't say anything...wish I could've had a good reply to that one. Kym...mom to 5 including (8ds)...who we lined up around the block, opened up our personal lives to the whole world and waited and waded through red tape to adopt!!!!! Guest guest
Here are a couple of our favorites... In Target when was a baby - a woman walks up to me and asks me if I'm going to have any more children...I said " what " and she just walked away... My next door neighbors want to know if we are jealous of them because their kids are normal and mine isn't...this was after I had to talk to him about his son using my front garden to ride his scooter thru...and the kid was 13 yo...and he calls me uptight... Or the 1st Down Syndrome support group meeting we went to when was 3 (took me a while to get the nerve up to go) and one of the parents wanted to know why we were there because our child didn't look or act like theirs...I was like I had nothing else to do with my evening so I thought I'd just come here to make you feel bad...needless to say I haven't spoken to the woman since and we changed support groups... And the newest one was the Director (not Principal - he's too important and smart for that) of the school last week when we were talking about repeating 1st grade said " you know he'll never be a rocket scientist " ...so now I've signed up to learn Spanish since he won't be a " Rocket Scientist " - he can be bilingual )) And teach the Director! Guest guest
That is funny! And yes we've all been there... I just found the hospital picture of Hannah and I was so wrapped up in everything going on that I didn't realize how CUTE SHE was!! When she was born, the geneticist said to me... " She HAS down syndrome but she IS a baby. For a long time she's just going to be a baby. Love her like any other baby. " One of the smartest things ever said to me. Guest guest
Wow... what a scary thing!! Hannah's lungs collapsed and she was taken to ICU before I could really see her when she was just born. The " baby " picture from the hospital was when she was released 2 weeks later and with no tubes and wires, I think she looked great!! How is Marvin's family holding up? I've been praying for them. When Fiona was born she had choked herself almost to death in her cord. she was swollen and bluish gray and wasn't moving. She definitely was not CUTE. When I look at all her first fotos up till after heart surgery when she was 4 months old, those pictures are still frightening. I still can't look at those pictures without choking up. Cute is something else. I never ever thought I would NOT think a baby of mine was the cutest one going, but my little darling definitely was not cute. She is now though!!!!!
