Hi

Today was Kristi's IEP. Everything went well. Not only has Kristi shown a lot

of improvement this year, but I decided, as and I usually do as a team,

that I would take control of the IEP from the start, gently but firmly, politely

and diplomatically.

I started right off with what Kristi really needs to know...how to use a

telephone, how to talk on a phone, the differences in money and change back, the

concept of time, etc. Some of these were things they hadn't even thought about.

Of course, then I listened intently to them, interjecting my own thoughts and

opinions all the way until the end. Like when they mentioned PE, I said, Kristi

likes to dance, so some adaptive dancing and aerobic exercise should be included

in one of her PE classes. They mentioned other regular classes. I suggested

FACS (Home Ec). Kristi is going to need to know how to cook, how to bake, how

to measure and prepare food, how not to waste it.

For careers for Kristi, they said she scored high on her vocational tests which

indicated jobs caring for people, plants, and animals. She does do well with

all of our pets and is very friendly to animals. So that is a possible career,

as is hair (though Mom doesn't like that one). She plays with all the teachers

hair and they all say she has a hair touch like no one who has ever touched

their hair.

Incidentally they mentioned a non-DS young man who went through all 12 years of

school in Special Ed. Saturday he opens his own green house business here in

town. Inman is his name, I don't know him, but that's quite an

accomplishment. I do not know his developmental delay but it is not Down

syndrome.

To reward Kristi, we are going to Fort after school and buy tickets for

the big circus that is going to there next Wednesday. The other kids and I will

enjoy that. and Mom return from California on Thursday of next week

just in time for our 16th wedding anniv. on Friday.

Dad to , Kristi, and (all three Down syndrome) and (Cri du

chat)

Husband to C. in Mo.

Uncle Daddy to and in California (both Down syndrome)

I am glad Kristi's IEP went well. How old is she? Is she in high school or

middle school?
