Guest guest
Hey docs: Thanks again to and Les for 'instigating' this listserv about 6-7 years ago and to all the great contributors, old and new. Boy, another year, I have learned alot. If I remember correctly, I was the first one to post something on this list (after ) 6-7 years ago. Thanks to Dan Beebe, for keeping me tuned-up in 2005. Dan, you are a 'Master' chiropractor. To Vern: you are truly an " uber-chiro " in our profession. Words are not enough for uncle Vern. To , thanks for the laughs and the wit. And to recent frequent-poster, Dr. Sears, a hearty welcome! , I believe your vision for the world is similar to mine, and your passion is unquestioned but your method for getting their I could hardly DISAGREE with more. In the future we will have some good debates no doubt. I'll say this- If healthcare is a " right " then you and I and everyone in healthcare are nothing more than slaves. Healthcare is no more a right than is indoor plumbing. I'l g further by reiterating that I beleive we have no " health care crisis " in this country, we have no " health insurance crisis " in this country But-what we DO have is a HEALTH crisis. All the so-called " crises " are mere effects of the poor choices, millions of Americans make daily, regarding their personal lives. " Health " , on the other hand, is indeed a right, but not healthcare. I give you some more food for thought in the links at bottom. Docs: In 2006 my vision is for a world in which freedom, prosperity, happiness and health are the norm rather than the exception. I believe that my purpose as a chiro is to work toward this vision, with special emphasis on health. My work with an OBCE committee is to promote more freedom and less unnecessary and burdensome rules whenever possible...and my li'l baby 'Cspine.org' project is/will be intended to continue to promote community within our ranks. Docs, I am finishing my 7th year in my current location, every year has been MORE prosperous than the previous one. In fact 2 weeks ago, I had my busiest week ever. As of Dec 31, I will have extracted myself from all MCOs/PPO-schemes except for Axis. I think Axis PPO should change its name to Atlas...because it is the only PPO in the area focused on holding up the world rather than destroying it. The best part about being outside of managed care is that I am free TO USE MY BRAIN!! Folks there are strong forces at work in the healthcare profession (inside and outside of chiropractic) who might claim that they LOVE chiropractors. Docs, these organizations and individuals don't really love " chiropractic " at all. In fact, all they want is the chiropractor's BODY (your manual manipulating skills, to be exact) and what they want is to set up a system where they get to use your " manipulative skills " (which are unquestionably the best in the world) for a " quickie " (3-6 visits) and then pay you a " streetwalker's rate " (i.e. CHP pays $20 for a 1/2 hour new pt. exam!!) and keep almost all the control re. clinical decision making outside of your office!!! Basically, they want to buy your body and they want you to leave your brain at home. And this is very unfortunate, because it is the chiropractor's brain that is his/her greatest tool!! It is the brain of chiropractic that is most beautiful. A chiropractor with an engaged brain, has a unique purpose, intent and philosophy that is indentifiably distinct from allopathic medicine. A chiropractor with a brain is able to educate and counsel patients, business leaders, politcos, allopaths and the public in general. A chiropractor with a brain might even have an opinion re. someone's health beyond the scope of acute back pain, heachaches and musculo-skeletal disorders. A chiropractor with a brain has the ability to be a healthcare leader in their community. But, obviously, some powers-that-be are perhaps a little daunted or even frightened of the potential power of a chiropractor's brain... either that or they just don't think a chiropractor's brain is worth anything at all. In 2006, I would urge each and every one of us to re-examine our own practice and take an inventory of all the places that we've compromised our integrity. Everyone of us has our own " line in the sand " ...in my relatively short career, I have seen too many docs backing up and drawing new " lines " a little farther back every few years.....the excuse is " I have no choice " , or " Hey, I have kids " or " It isn't just chiropractors, it's all of healthcare " . Imagine a chiropractic profession wherein the chiros started showing up every day of their lives like they " really meant business " ? Perhaps, well-dressed and professional-looking and acting? Perhaps joined a trade association!?! Perhaps got on some professional committee?!? Imagine if all the " been-at-it-for-quite-a-while-but-I-am-burnt-out-and-shell-shocked " chiros just decided to stop taking the second-class treatment from insurers, fellow health care providers and patients and really stepped up to their " line in the sand " , brushed it out and proudly took a step forward!?? Whoa!! It IS possible folks! Chiropractic, on paper, should be in a leadership role in healthcare in this country. And if it were, we would all be a bit more prosperous I am sure. But that prosperity would be well-earned by us! Well-earned, for helping to improve the health of our communities and our nation and world by promoting our unique values and philosophy re. health and utilizing our tools to perpetuate a healthcare response that is much more sane and sustainable than the current dominant paradigm. It IS possible. But it has got to happen in the mind (the chiropractor's mind!!) before it will happen in reality. And please don't expect the government to take the lead in making this happen, 'cause it won't!! It has to come FROM us , it won't EVER come TO us. So here's to a free, prosperous, happy and healthy 2006.
