Guest guest
Hello all! I usually do not post much but i felt the need to brag a bit about my daughter. Emma is 7 years old - will be 8 in July - and is in 1st grade. We had her IEP today and I walked away feeling really happy with her placement and all that was said. Last years IEP had 18 goals in it and well Emma accomplished and completed 13 of them. YEAH!!!! She recognized the alphabet, counts to 10 most of the time, knows her colors and shapes and is starting to recognize sight words or high frequency words. Her teacher and the whole IEP team seems to just love my daughter and that alone makes me feel really good. The only thing that may hang us up next year is Emma's age - she really should transition of the K-3rd grade room she is in right now and move to the 4 -6 grade room at another school. My dh and I really PUSHED her last year of Early Intervention preschool for her to stay an extra year so she did not begin Kindergarten at age 5 but was 6 yrs instead. This was an awesome for Emma to that extra time in preschool coupled with Head Start because it really helped her gain some confidence. She just seemed " more ready " for Kindergarten at age 6 rather than at age 5 yrs. Soooooo, now it was said today that EVENTUALLY should have to " move up " to be with the kids her age rather than being almost a full year older than the rest of the kids. I really disgree with this but we will see what happens next year as my dh and I were able to " hold " that off until then. I am not ready for her to move on just yet because she is GAINING so much from her current teacher and even the team as a whole agreed with that one. Emma and her teacher Deb really work well together and get a lot accomplished. Emma is also very happy in her class which also means alot to me. I am not worried about next year at all because I KNOW that dh and I will what is right for Emma not matter what the IEP team feels at that time. I am just so happy that Emma is making such gains and really coming along. Her teacher told me today that she will be really soon - that alone just puts a smile on my face. Thank for reading - Colleen Mom to (11yrs NDA), Emma (7 yrs DS) and Hannah (4 yrs NDA)
