Listmates,

I am looking for anyone who has had and is having success billing for low level laser therapy (Erchonia, Microlight 830, etc.). We were part of the original FDA laser test group, along with Ron Johansen and have held to a billing code for infrared 97026. However the reimbursement is usually a paultry $5, not really consistent with an attented hitech modality. We usually pass the rest of the cost on to the patient where the ins. contract allows it but this is still not right for such a useful modality.

Recent options for the coding are in the 2005 ChiroCode and include 97039 'unlisted modality constant attendance' and S8948 Low-Level Laser, constant attendance (p113 ChiroCode book). The latter code is new since the FDA approval but none of the ins companies we are billing recognize it!

So if all of us who use this TX start approaching the ins industry (all of them and all of us) we should get some response.

I suggest we share experience on the listserve on this matter also. We are currently in talks with Pacific Source and Lifewise and they have been 'considering' the issue.

Comments??

BTW we have had consistent and great results with the 830Nm laser on DJD of the knees! All those 60+ year olds with mild to advanced OA (especially of the knees) respond better to the laser than the carpal tunnel patients (for whom this modality was approved). Three to five minutes through the joint line of the affected knee is usually better that the synvisc injections. Not only is there short term relief, there is also some gradual functional improvement over the course of a 6 week TX program. Try it out and let us know what you find.

I would highly recommend getting to one of Dr. Dan and Dr. Amy's seminars on cold laser. They teach protocols on neuromuscular reeducation utilizing laser and when used as a tool to do NMS reeducation you can bill 97712 (NMS reeducation). We have had good success being reimbursed for this code, provided the documentation supports its use.

Sorry the code is 97112, not 97712!
