My son, Mathias (2 1/2) has had a lot of intestinal problems. Constipation is

more prevelent in our kids due to low tone than in typically developing kids.

Having said that, constipation followed by diarrhea (black or not) could be a

sign of a blockage of some sort. It could be something as benign as the food he

ate caused him to get backed up (lots of fiber without enough water will do

this) or something that needs to watched more closely. If your son shows no

other symptoms like fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, distended (hard) belly

then talk to you pediatrician but it probably is diet related. Make sure he

gets lots of water to drink. If you live in a cold climate, this time of year

is very dry and he probably needs more water than normal. If he has any of

these other symptoms, take him to the doctor. If this is a problem, he has had

on/off for awhile talk to the pediatrician about testing him for Hirschsprung's.

This is a lack of nerve cells in the colon (large

intestine).

Keeping a food log and having the school and day care write in what he ate and

when he pooped (include consistency and color) will help get a handle on what is

going on. Good luck.

Hi everyone.

Looking for some input here.....

I have never had issues with my little ie in this area, he is

almost 4 now.

X-Mas nite, he was terribly contipated. We almost took him to the

emergency room, he was in so much pain.

The following morn. went to the drug store and got a childrens

laxitive, and that fixed the problem. Since then I have I keep a

weekly watch on his movements, and give him prune juice when needed.

About once a week. It's either he doesnt go for a few days, and then

its hard, or with just a little prune juice we have explosions! And I

mean several in one day.......poor fellow. I just cant get this

regulated.

I work full time. In the morning he goes to a day care lady (in her

own home) then the bus takes him to school all day, and then back to

MEE-MAW's (day care lady), then home in the evening. So with all that

said it is a challenge to keep track of his movements.

This week has been fine, I thought.

yesterday my hubby said MEE-MAW said he had alot of dihareaha (sp?),

so I checked his back-pack, and there was a note asking me if I had

given him an enema.....and that it was balck and runny....(???)

I have no clue.

I was telling a freind, and she said black could mean blood...and she

said to keep a close watch on him...I asked why, is that serious?

Then I had to drag it out of her....and she said it sometimes is a

sign of CANCER!

WHAT?

Please help me with this......

I have talked to his Ped. about this once a few weeks ago, and she

felt like as long as prune was getting him going it was ok.

Constipation is normal in our children.

Im OK with that, as long as Im not overlooking a more serious

situation...........

I am at work now, so I cant post again untill tonight. But THANKS to

anyone that has any advice!
