Last year they adopted a beautiful baby girl named Summer. They will be adopting another baby soon. Next is Leanne. She is married to . She has a step-son, Ben. They also have , 4 and , 18 months. Last but not least is . He is 23 and has DS. We live in Michigan, so he is able to go to school until he is 26. He is in a community based program. They focus on life skills and job opportunities for half the day and accademics the other half of the day. He already has a job, so he gets more of the other things. He has worked for Chili's for over three years. He is a dishwasher. The management has been wonderful. They really know how to work with him. He probably would have been fired many times if he worked anywhere else. They actually take time to make this job work for . I do enjoy reading all the introductions. I hope they keep coming. Guest guest
I guess I should reintorduce myself. My name is Val Surbey and my husband Vince and I are mom and dad to Tim who is now 14 years old and in first year of high school. He's fully included, loves his aid and has a crush on his choir teacher. He sings in the choir...to that end he got a karaoke machine for Christmas. Tim started off with some major health issues around respiratory things, but as he's grown, those things seem to be lessening or disappearing altogether. I'm on the board for the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society (MDSS) and I'm sitting on a national committee for adults with Down syndrome. We have another meeting at the end of February in Calgary. The Down Syndrome Congress conference will be held in Vancouver in 2006 and I will be there as part of the committee. I will also be attending the conference in Kitchener-Waterloo this coming May. Guest guest
I'm Elaine and I've been on the list for YEARS it seems:)) I have received the best support in good times and bad from this group of folks. I have just celebrated my Silver wedding anniversary (Dec 22) with dh . We just retired from the Army 2 years ago and both teach in Savannah. He teaches special ed. and I am a parapro finishing my degree. We have a married daughter , whose husband is going BACK to Iraq Thursday (woe is me) and who has a new baby daughter six weeks old, the beautiful little Elise. My son is 18 is swimming still with Spec. Oly. ( is coach) and also roller skating. He has a girlfriend with DS. She is quite pretty. He had a VSD repair at 11 months. He has had 4 sets of tubes and serious croup. He has two mainstreamed classes in high school and we've had to fight for those. He is getting his social skills back since we moved over here and got him out of the last school. I just want more academics. Why can't so-called educators get that parents may want them toTEACH something and not TRAIN something. Sorry, I digress. I hope all you newcomers love this group as much as I do. I may have to delete a lot of messages next few months. I am working full time and taking two college courses. Elaine
