Guest guest
I never got the day after Thanksgiving shopping thing either, . I'd prefer to stay home and hang with my Botch Boys.....who are all still sleeping. I hosted Thanksgiving at my house for the first time yesterday. We cooked the 22 pound turkey and provided plenty of alcohol. The rest of my family each brought a side, so it wasn't so bad.....except for cleaning up. I was exhausted! No one helped my except my dear hubby. Everyone else just sat and talked. It appeared everyone was really enjoying themselves, so we just sucked it up and cleaned up ourselves. I just got done this morning washing the rest of the good dishes. I decided to host it since it may be the last time our family is together for awhile. My brother got his orders to go to Iraq. : ( We're all quite upset. He left Nov. 8th for Ft. Dix for 3 months of training and can't come home weekends. He leaves 1/28 (my birthday) for Iraq. He is a Lt. in the Navy and has been in the reserves for about 5 years.....ever since he left his job with the Navy. We're all very nervous. He thinks he will be in Kuwait and in charge of weapon cleanup, so he won't be fighting, although he still must be retrained to do that. It isn't safe anywhere over there, as we all know. He little girl is so upset. She's a daddy's girl and it's breaking her heart that he'll be gone for a year. gave us a scare Tuesday night and subsequently we ended up in the emergency room for 5 hours on Wednesday. He was running errands with me in the car Tues. night along with his brothers and was sitting in the car for about an hour....cross-legged like he usually does and shouldn't! Well, when we got home, he got out of the car as I was walking into the mudroom and he never came in. When I went back out to the garage, he was leaning on the hood of the car wincing in pain and telling me he couldn't walk. I just thought his leg was asleep from sitting in the car and told him to shake his leg, which he did but he couldn't bear any weight on it. I began to think it was a cramp. He was crying....which is unusual. He has a very high tolerance of pain. He consistently said it hurt behind his right kneecap. He could not walk and was sweating and obviously in alot of pain. I sent my neighbor to get my hubby and we somehow got on the couch. I called the doctor after hours of heating pad, motrin, trying to get him to walk a little, etc. She couldn't figure it out and said if we got him to rest comfortably over night that we should wait and bring him in the morning. Well, we decided to go to the hospital in the morning instead. They took an xray and said that he has a piece of cartiliage floating around in his knee and that maybe that was what was causing him pain. They just said to give him motrin and have him take it easy and if it isn't better in 4-5 days to take him to an orthopedic doctor. Just what I needed to hear the day before I have 30 people coming for Thanksgiving! Well, long story short, he is getting better day by day and seems to be able to walk again. We just can't figure this out. I think the cartilage has probably been there and was not the issue at all. Rather, I think he may have just twisted it while getting out of the car or walking around the car. The dr. said he saw no fluid, but Don and I think his knee is swollen now. I think I will still take him to an orthopedic dr. because he is still leary about using that leg completely. Any thoughts? Sorry to ramble on for so long here. House is quiet and the time was right for typing! Hope everybody had a wonderful day yesterday! Guest guest
Would a pinched nerve show up on an xray? That's what my husband thought it could be too. Now the doctor didn't say it was a torn cartilage, but he did say a " piece " of calcified cartilage is what he saw on the xray. I was so tired and out of it by the time we saw him that now I am finally thinking and mad at myself for not asking more questions. Guest guest
Thanks for responding Loree. No, never wore orthotics. He is very flat-footed and his right foot has always turned in a bit.......I'm pigeon-toed as well. He tends to roll in a little when he walks as well. He was seen years ago once a year at Easter Seals by an orthopedic doctor and he never seemed overly concerned with 's gait. You've made me think now that because it is his right foot that turns in and it is his right leg now that is bothering him, that there may be a connection. Guest guest
Jackie - does he wear arch supports? 's gait changed and he was really dragging his feet when he walked. He also was complaining of his feet bothering him. Tim took him to a good shoe store where he was fitted (at no charge) with arch supports. It made a world of difference in his gait and he no longer complains of his feet hurting. The shoes were only $42.00. It's worth a try - until you get in to see the ortho. 's feet also grew alot this summer. He went from a size 3W in July to a size 5W (Men's size) in September. That would come out to a size 7.5W for women...my size...lol. So, I told Tim if he ever can't find 's shoes in the morning, he could wear a pair of my tennis shoes My foot fit perfectly into 's shoe. I hope feels better soon. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Jackie - 's feet were always a bit flat, but when he gained 30+ pounds, it became much worse. That is when I noticed the change in his gait. He's lost at least 10+ of those extra pounds - due to being on adderral, but now I am worried about him not eating enough. About the arch supports, not all shoe stores have qualified fitters. The arch supports need to be customized for the person wearing them. The shoe store Tim took to is 30 miles away - there was another one about 40 miles east of us that our local DS support group refers families to. I also called ahead to make sure someone would wait on right away (and they had the shoes ready for him to try on - only a size smaller than he needed). TJ just took to get a haircut - he better not come home looking like TJ (military haircut)! Re: Thanksgiving and 's leg Are your kids flat-footed? Guest guest
Hey Jackie, I started writing this yesterday then... Anyway, prayers for your brother and his family and yours. I know how hard that must be. Good job on the 30 folk you entertained on Thursday! About ryans leg- my son jesse gets all kinds of pains that are unexplainable in his legs. He has some heel thing, where the bones are not attached yet to themselves- thats been xrayed 2x already. Has ryan had some kind of growth spurt lately? I think taking him to an orthopedists is a good idea anyway. BTW, amanda has flat feet- and wore orthodics until about 3 years ago. Now she just wears good sneakers and some funky shoes with low heels or cute boots- girls!

Guest guest
I'll try the arch supports for now. According to Shriner's, Karrie is becoming more lax in her joints as she ages. The doctor there told me not to worry about the inserts in her shoes anymore. Should I take her to an ortho specialist? I thought Shriner's would know more about this than a " regular " ortho doc. This doctor just said it so matter-of-factly. It wrecked me! Sue mom to Kate 15 and Karrie 8 w/ds and other issues (who is also flat-footed and rolls her ankles in) ..
