Hello friends. I've been scarce over the past few weeks for several reasons. Jake had three weeks off between the end of his summer program and his return to school yesterday and it was a challenging time, to say the least. In addition to being out-of-sorts and unhappy due to the lack of routine and structure, we saw an increase in undesirable behaviors and aggression and his toileting skills kinda went out the window for a while there.

He has a brand new teacher this year, though he's at the same school he's been at since kindergarten (he's in 5th grade this year.) This is his 7th teacher at this school now...it's ridiculous. The new teacher has no experience with autistic students, no training beyond a special ed certification course that the county school system offers, and seemed woefully misinformed about many things at our initial meeting with her last week. We had very grave concerns about her abilities and I spent much of the holiday weekend communicating and discussing those concerns with the principal and the county's autism coordinator, etc. So I'm having to closely monitor that situation, document everything, and pray that Jake's behavior doesn't present new challenges. The first few weeks of back-to-school are usually a bumpy adjustment period for him anyway, having a teacher who

doesn't really know what she's doing is not reassuring.

began attending a public middle school this year after going to a small Catholic school since kindergarten. He's even riding a school bus after carpooling all these years, so it's been a big adjustment with lots of preparation and excitement.. .and a little bit of nervousness too!

I also spent much of the holiday weekend shuffling around and limiting my physical activity, yet I still pulled off hubby's big birthday dinner complete with homemade banana cake with peanut butter frosting Monday night. I've had what I thought was a hernia for quite a while now and Friday evening I began having a lot of pain, to the point that it became apparent that something was very, very wrong. I thought something had "given" and I had finally pulled something out of place and would be unable to put off having surgery to correct it any longer. My plan was to see my doctor once the boys were back in school anyway to address this.

So yesterday morning I managed to get in to see a surgeon in the morning, he sent me for a CT scan (my first ever...three bottles of barium...ugh! !!), and called me back yesterday afternoon to tell me that it's not a hernia at all but a very large mass in my pelvis. Which actually explains several of the other symptoms I've been having for some time now that didn't seem to have anything to do with a hernia. Like incontinence that kind of appeared out of nowhere last year, apparently this mass is pressing on my bladder so that would explain that. The general surgeon thinks it some sort of large fibroid mass and not cancerous, but has consulted a gyn oncologist and I have an appt. with that dr. tomorrow (Thursday). He's concerned about the severe pain I'm experiencing (and I have a very high pain threshhold to begin with) and something about shadows and borders and blood

supply or lack thereof. These things tend to have the worst timing, don't they?! *sigh*

I would appreciate positive thoughts and prayers as we navigate through this uncertain time. I'm concerned that any surgery or changes in routine that my health needs may present will only throw Jake off even further. Thanks!

Love,

Judy (mom to , age 12, NT, and Jake, age 10.5, ASD)
