Interestingly, (at 12) seems to be " growing out of it. " Lately she's put up with - and enjoyed - environments she stringently avoided in the past. My kids also all have hyperacute hearing, but 's seems to be the worse. When she was young sudden laughter would make her cry. - Becky
Guest guest
Hello All - Did you ever consider that the movies may be a sensory integration thing? My son (10 w/DS) could not go to the movies for years although he would listen to his walkman so loud you could hear it accross the room. He also said the movie was too loud. What I finally figured out was that the combination of large screen, dark room & loud was overload. This lasted until he was about 8. Now, as from this group can attest (we met on this group & went to see the Incredibles together with & Sammy)it is no longer an issue. He doesn't even need to sit next to me. I think his brain had to develop to the point where he could accept all of the input and be able to process it before he could enjoy the movie theatre. Guest guest
My youngest son (nds) had severe sensory integration problems when he was younger. He could not handle movies, the circus or any of the shows that you would typically take kids to see. After a couple of years of intensive OT he can now sit through these kinds of shows and movies. It still bothers him some, but no screaming etc. Darcy Movies & Sound Hello All - Did you ever consider that the movies may be a sensory integration thing? Guest guest
Breezy was afraid of the movie theater and it was a bad deal for my other daughter, she could only enjoy a movie with her friends or older sibbling's and she and I rarely got to see one together. Then the area children's retreat, Peaceable Kingdom, built a small movie theater. Breezy went to the retreat with her school class and was encouraged to go into theater and she did! The small room and familiar surroundings allowed her to actually enjoy the movie. I attended there with her on several occassions and then we went to a " real " theater with friends, whom I had told that if I left in a hurry keep my other daughter with them and we would meet outside after the show. We allowed Breezy to go into the theater with lights off and select our seats and she did just fine. It was a thrill for me and for her sister too. She now goes to the " real " theater all the time with me or others and she still enjoys the shows at Peaceable Kingdom also.

Guest guest
When was younger, she was not happy in movies, usually we had to leave the theatre. We discovered the ear plugs, which helped. Now she doesn't use ear plugs at movies. A biggie for although, was getting to the theater before the lights were turned down. If she could go in when the lights were on, she handled it much better. Now, it really doesn't matter. Sharon H. Guest guest
One of the things I like the most about the theaters with the new stadium seating is that your child can stand up and move around and not block the view of the people behind them. Guest guest
With all the " movie " talk we took Nic to see Polar express. This is my first trip to the theatre with Nic-Bob took him to see Shrek2 over the summer. I was amazed of how well he did. He hopped back and forth a few times between mine and Bob's laps but otherwise he was great! Guest guest
--- Trent and I went to the movies today and saw Polar Express, I feel it is the best kids movie I have seen. Very visual for those not into stories - and lots of fun. Trent was mesmerized - thought he would do his usual 'screaming and waving arms' during the roller coaster parts - but sat very quiet. When it comes out on DVD, will be in to get a copy, I really loved it. Also thought, the sound levels were not over the top loud, again probably made with younger children in mind. Keep smiling Jan, mother of Trent 20 yo w/DS, 9 more sleeps to we are off to London, Lapland and Europe. and Shannen just back from 5 days in Tasmania - Trent extremely happy is sisters are back home. Guest guest
The thing I like about the stadium seating is I can actually see the movie without have to keep trying to find a way to see around the tall person who always seems to want to sit in front of me, I assume kids like it for the same reason, they can actually see the movie without having an adult block the view. :-) Joy Re: Movies & Sound One of the things I like the most about the theaters with the new stadium seating is that your child can stand up and move around and not block the view of the people behind them. Guest guest
LOL we call the arm moving thing " flapping " Nic flaps when he see alot of movement like kids playing at recess or like the roller coaster thing in the movie...surprisingly, he didn't do it then either. Nic didn't have a problem with the sound but I thought it was WAY TOO loud for me.
