Elaine,

Yes-- this guy is way off base. can apply based on his own

income. You will have to charge him room/board (and start doing it now before

he

starts SSI-even if you have to loan him the money to do so. His resources

(assets) shouldn't be more than $2000.

Where DO they get these guys---good grief!

I have been told for years that once was 18, our income did not

Security

(doing a prescreening) who told us that because he lives at home, it will and

we will probably be denied. I don't know how many workshops I attended that

stated that we needn't worry once he was 18, he would qualify. Does anyone

know more about this? I think this guy is talking out of the wrong end of his

body, but you can't argue with bureaucrats.

- this is interesting.

We stay in the UK, so things are obviously diff.

But recently I've been going down the road of guardianship for my son who is now 16.

Long story short - the social worker came out with a corker of a comment thus....................... "peter is now 16 - HE has to ask for respite himself"

Think it was a way to wriggle out of giving us respite, but that's a whole other topic.

The Lawyer did explain about the various levels - ours seems to be a middle of the road option. It means that we can request things like respite, medical intervention and so on. may not understand these things, but the lawyer said it takes us back to the day before his 16th birthday - YOU have control. (sorry - that makes me sound like a control freak - i'm not - i just didn't want some smart a** to wlak in and say cis he was a certain age we couldn't have input into his life)

Now.................. That's not to say WON'T be included in decisions..................... it just means that the people who know him well can help him choose about respite and so on. NOT some SW who is reading from a book and rigidly following protocol and procedures.

My daughter Louise who's 18 asked if she could be included in all this and the lawyer said yes, and explained about it - so HE knew she understood.

I feel better that Louise is on it with me in case anything happens to hubbie and i.

The other thing we did in regard to this is...................... Our GP (our family doc) has put on the list of Adults with a learning disability list. Basically it means that if any initiatives are applicable to or to us as a family, we get told about them (our info is taken from the health board data) As well as this, the GP applies for a certificate for us that states we can help decide about treatment and even request it if the DOc and w e think it appropriate. For example - the flu shots. or if he needed treatment say - to find out the cause of a sor stomach. THe SW COULDN'T say "you've gone too far - you shouldn't have done that".

It's just another thing we have to deal with

This is a list for parents to share stories, treatments, therapies, ideas, advice and support.

Guardianship regarding those with disabilities

HI allThis topic has been explored here and on other lists that I am on for those with disabilities.I have wondered about this over and over again.Well, tonight I went to a seminar at our Center for Independent Living, which was with a female who is an attorney and has TWO with disabilities of her own.She suggested that one NOT get into the Guradianship legalities, unless you MUST.There are some reasons why and she herself does not have a Guardianship for her son who is high functioning Autism and age 20.She gave me some legal papers that most attorneys would charge 500$ for she said. These can be photo copied and can be used by any members of our family. The first one is a HEALTH POWER of ATTORNEY which can be used for anyone, even an adult for indicting who we wish to carry out our health and future medical decisions, should one become incapacitated. The other one is a PROPERTY Powere of Attorney. She said that if I wanted one for the schools , when he turns 18 for the next IEP which is around his next birthday when he turns 18, I can write up my own contract and have my son sign it and have him give me power to attend his meetings, to discuss anything educationally with the schools etc. This prevents them from ASKING the child just prior to the IEP if they " want mom there." Let's say that day that child has a bad day and is mad at mom, and answers, " NO, do not invite her to my IEP meeting, I am 18 now and do not want her there." Well, this document that I would have him sign in advance, in a family meeting, would give me the right to go and talk and attend any meeting pertaining to his education at the school or when he goes to college. Guardianship is NOT recommended for one reason because each time you seek to do something, once you have it, be it put a child or parent in a Nursing home or residential treatment center etc, you must still go to Court to get that permission. There are other things such as the cost and that it takes away the child's rights in some ways. Also, once you get Guardianship, it is almost impossible to revoke it, she said. Only one parent can be the guardian, the other has to be the person to be the successor in case that parent passes away or whatever.I was so interested to learn all kinds of things and I know I am skipping things and not sure if certain things pertain state to state, but I learned a lot. in Illinois

I found that my skin shows a noticeable softening when I take flax oil

but not ground flaxseeds (they are freshly ground, not packaged

pre-ground). I wonder if the absorption is quicker or more complete

when dealing with the oil rather than having to break down all of the

components of the seeds....

Thoughts on this?

One other thing I noticed with the oil is that I can actually smell a

faint flax-y odor from time to time in my skin, so I suppose that's a

big indicator that I am absorbing it!

Hi ,

I suggest the KIM software is how to tell how well your diet is balancing

the various Omega 3s and 6s. As a hint, using anything other than extra

virgin olive oil is a big no no. Eating Omega 6 based oils will blow the

balance out the window.

You also need to consider the peroxidative nature of the various fatty acids

you eat as the more double bonds they have the more sensitive they are to

free radical attack and turning bad. Some time ago I develped a Excel

spreadsheet which allowed you to input your fatty acid intakes and get an

indication at how at risk your diet was to internal peroxidation. Here are

the link to my research:
