Guest guest
, A couple of things from an ole hand who¹s been shocked numerous times and who is on his 4th ICD in 4 years. First, are you sure they turned the ICD off completely or could they have just turned off some of the functions that might have been causing the inappropriate shocks? It's very strange that they would leave you unprotected without any ICD at all. If you're nervous about it, they can set you up with an external vest to wear. I had one for almost 3 weeks when I was waiting for my chest infection to heal. Go to: http://www.lifecor.com and check it out. They should be able to get it for you the same day as they order it. Second, and I feel very adamant about this. DO NOT LEFT YOUR EP REPLACE THE LEAD...MAKE SURE A CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON TRAINED IN LASER LEAD EXTRACTION DO THE PROCEDURE. It's okay for an EP to place the device but they are NOT surgeons. If there is any substantial amount of scaring they will have to call a surgeon in anyway to do the extraction. Many times the EP will just cut and cap the lead and put another one in. Call me crazy but hey, I'd rather have as few leads sticking in my heart as possbile!!! But that's just me. If you want to discuss this in more detail feel free to call me or email me at the address below. If you have AOL Instant Messenger, we can chat that way or , MSN, etc. Let me know. Guest guest
Oh my - I am so sorry you had to go through this. Bt I have to question the logic: " Dr. thought their might be less of a risk going the weekend without having the ICD. " Less of a risk of what?? I too would be scared - that is not what you paid for! Who is on the hook if you need your ICD over the weekend? I just can't get my head around this one. I think I would demand to see the Doc tomorrow - NOT Monday. Good luck and do keep us posted. ~guin Crone wrote: > > Good Evening everyone! > At about 2:00 this morning I was awoke by a very unpleasant feeling > and a bright flash of light. Oh, goodness, !! Are you planning on joining the class action suit now that your lead has actually fractured? I have one, too, and am in total fear of this happening to me. Guest guest
Hi , So sorry you have had to go through this. My lead fractured in June and they shut my ICD off before I got shocked. I went over 24 hours without a working ICD. When I went into the hospital that next day, they put in a new lead but did not extract the fractured one. I will want the leads removed if and when they need to put in another one. I certainly understand how you feel. You will get a lot of good advice and understanding here on this group. Best of luck, Sydney -- First Shock! Good Evening everyone! At about 2:00 this morning I was awoke by a very unpleasant feeling and a bright flash of light. I had to really think if I was awake or dreaming. I woke my husband up and told him that I think I was just shocked. Before I could finish the sentence I was shocked again and then again! It was horrible for me because I didn't feel like my heart was giving me any grief. We called 9-1-1 and I was taken to the hospital. The Medtronic tech was at the hospital within the hour which I was very pleased about! He turned off my ICD and told me that my heart was fine (aside from the LQTS) and the faulty lead fractured. I was immediately relieved that my heart was ok but at the same time I was flooded with anger that this happened. I had already seen my Cardio/Electro and the pacemaker nurses and they attempted to "fix" the faulty lead by changing it's settings. At this point I was at a different hospital then the one where I had the ICD implanted. The Cardio/Electro that was tending to me questioned the diagnoses. Initially I was scheduled this afternoon to have the lead replaced, but this Dr. thought their might be less of a risk going the weekend without having the ICD. Turns out I have an appointment with Dr. Ackerman at the Mayo Clinic on Monday. He specializes in LQTS. So for now, I sit here without a working ICD and I feel very scared, uncertain, angry & confused. I will be very curious to see what the Doc at the Mayo clinic has to say about my diagnoses! Thanks for listening! I just had to share my experience with a group of people that I knew would understand! Take care everyone! in Minneapolis, MN
