Guest guest
We just started back on Adderral. He can only tolerate 5 mg, otherwise, he has severe tics. has complex bioneurological behaviors - he's also on depakote for behaviors and carbatrol for his seizures. We are and have been playing the medication games - what is working, what is not, what combination works, what doesn't. We haven't found the magic combination yet. has also been on strattera, respirdal, abilify and buspar. is not your average child with DS where behaviors are concerned. There are only 1-2 other children who have similiar issues who are represented here by family members. There are more kids represented here who have DS and ADHD/ADD. was diagnosed with ADHD, mixed type 2 years ago. I discounted that - but we have re-examined his symptoms and are trying adderral again. Other than the local psychiatrist, 's evaluations are done at Kennedy Krieger. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
I have to add that we are missing the behavioral supports, which are critical. MR Waiver is hard to come by, but I just found out a slot has been designated for him!! --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Nic is on Dexedrine 10mg/day. We are still tweaking too. He had lost 5 lbs. the first month and 1 pound the second. we see the Dr monthly to keep an eye on his weight. Also, we have wrap-around services for Nic's behaviors too. Guest guest
I have seen this at two levels. My daughter (now 31) was marginally ADHD. We could cope with that and the similar issues with her older brother. A boy who I coached in SO gymnastics was seriously ADHD. I always got him " off meds " because they needed those for school hours. Our practice venue was at a local YMCA which had a " matted room " that they used for a pre-school program. It was right for the gymnastics program I had and it was free! would get distracted by all the pre-school toys around the perimeter and getting him to practice was really hard. The compounding thing was that he'd get my daughter involved in his distracted play. A real highlight of my coaching career was a meet where I had three athletes. Jan, my daughter was called to uneven parallel bars where the coach must be to provide spotting should something go wrong. Immediately they called for floor exercises and I couldn't be there. In spite (or perhaps because of) his ADHD, he went onto the floor mat, saluted the judges, and did the best floor exercise I'd ever seen him do. The story isn't all that easy. In his teens, he became more of a problem than his parents (or the school) could handle. He was sent to to Pathfinder Village at the expense of our school district. Look them up on the web! There they did cope and he was growing up into a very nice young man when I last saw him. ADHD in its extremes can be really tough. Like everything with DS, it is patience, patience, and patience. Rick .. who eventually was inducted into the local " coaches hall of fame " I taught our region about parent coaching.
