I hope you weren't calling the 1-800 # and instead make an appointment to go

to your local office in person. I cannot tell you how many people I know have

been denied or had reduced amounts or had problems in general because they

called the toll free number!

Hi,

Not only should he qualify for it you can charge him his share of the

household costs so he gets the most he can. Your income makes no difference when

they

reach 18. I have talked to many people about this as my son is currently 17.

Talk to DMR usually they can help you handle all of this.

Hi Elaine

What you are being told is incorrect. As someone else stated ask to

speak to a supervisor. Also if you charge room and board at fair market

value and the people at SSA can help you determine this then he will

receive his full amount that he can get in your state. If you choose not

to charge room and board then they will decrease the amount he will

receive due to in kind support. Let them know at the application process

that you will be charging room ant board so that he will start receiving

the correct amount from the very beginning. There should be benefit

specialist available to help you to determine how much he can work and

maintain his benefits. These people are usually found at the Division of

Voc Rehab and they can really be a big help to you and your son if he is

able to work. There are several things within SSI that can help him save

for things that he will need to work or go to school. If you have any

further questions please feel free to contact me. I am an advocate in NM

that helps families through the SSI problems. I hope the info will help

you and your son. Take care Patty

SSI problems/Do I need a lawyer?

I have been told for years that once was 18, our income did not

affect his ability to get SSI. Today my husband talked to a man at

Social Security (doing a prescreening) who told us that because he lives

at home, it will and we will probably be denied. I don't know how many

workshops I attended that stated that we needn't worry once he was 18,

he would qualify. Does anyone know more about this? I think this guy

is talking out of the wrong end of his body, but you can't argue with

bureaucrats.
