Guest guest
Traci, better to find a more compliant doctor than to risk gavin's recovery. I had such problems with jesse after his tonsils were out and once the surgery was done, our ent didnt want to hear anything from us. definately did not stay in the hospt long enuf post surgery. we had amanda for 23 hours and by like 12 hours later she was fine and we all agreed to take her home. good luck in philly- hope you get some good docs! Guest guest
Thanks to all that responded about an overnight stay after T & A surgery. I called and told his nurse that we wanted him to do the surgery and we wanted to keep the surgery date...... BUT, we insisted on at least a 23 hr stay. Well, imagine my surprise when she called this morning to say that the Doc felt that if we felt so strongly about this issue of Gavin staying more than 4 hours, well then he felt we should go elsewhere. SOOO.... we are now delayed even longer on the surgery and we have to find a 3rd ENT. We have an appointment Sept. 30 at CHOPS (Children's Hosp of Phila). They also now have the trisomy 21 center open, so we're hoping to also get an appointment there. Instead of trying to find good specialists in our area, we're going to do the " one stop shopping " in Philadelphia!! All I can say is good! I would have felt very uncomfortable using a surgeon who wouldn't listen to the professional opinions of other physicians. It's been published that our kids should remain overnight in a journal of Otolaryngology. If he/she won't listen to his/her peers what hope do you have of him/her listening to you as a parent? Guest guest
Look at it this way Traci. If he was so quick to dismiss you when you felt strongly about something, how would he have been had something gone wrong. I think you did the right thing and remember everything is in God's timing. perhaps CHOPS is where Gavin is suppose to be. Anyway, sorry you had to go through this but kudo's to you for standing your ground. if more people would realize that they DO have a say in things, some things would change. Guest guest
Traci, I agree totally with what Loree says. Some doctors and their attitudes....holier than thou. Besides all the info you collected on this issue and if your insurance would allow it, I don't understand what the doctor's problem was with this. Screw him! (pardon me!) Guest guest
Going to CHOP sounds like a good idea to me. And we think we know of a couple of good ENT docs there. Actually, we've never had a problem with any CHOP doctor, though some are better than others. Charlie has been there lots. Sometimes it like we say, well, shall we mess around with local hospitals or shall we just go straight to CHOP? They do seem to know what they're doing and what they're about. But don't be surprised nor disappointed if you have to wait for an appointment. We had to wait literally months to get Charlie a visit with the T21 program. But on occasions when there was any urgency, we were seen promptly. Early on, once had a GI attending physician call me up at home on a Sat. morning. Oh, and know secondhand of a couple of other kids with Ds who had procedures done there. Very young girl stayed overnight after her T & A--believe her surgeon thought she would have to go to PICU but she did so well that a regular room for a night and let go the next afternoon was just fine. And once when Charlie was having day surgery, we bumped into older girl with Ds having ear tubes put in. They were in and out so fast I asked her parents if they shouldn't have used the drive thru window. Good luck, Bob, dad to Charlie 5 w/ Ds(CHOP warhorse) and 1 w/out Ds(only 3 trips so far) <<Thanks to all that responded about an overnight stay after T & A surgery. Guest guest
Hi, Di, We are about half way between Philadelphia and New York. We live in Plainsboro, NJ. I thought for a while that Charlie was on some sort of hospital inspection committee and determined to visit very !#*% hospital in the area. He musta missed duPont, though. Regards, Bob << Where are you from? we are just outside Philly. I prefer duPont children's hospital tho, in Delaware. Di >>
Guest guest
Vickie spent 3 1/2 weeks at Philly CHOP... I slept there every night... Overall everyone was great though there was one pediatric cardithoracic surgeon that was a little more " I am G*D almighty " then I liked but the nurses and all were excellant... they had a library on an upper floor with internet access so I had communtication with this list... Vickie was only 7 weeks old the day she was admitted..... The only time I did not sleep right next to her crib was when she was in CICU... but they found another bed in the hospital for me....
