Guest guest
Does anyone know of an " appropriate " assessment/test for cognitive ability for a 3 yr. old with Down syndrome?? I got a call tonight that from the school psychologist saying she was requested by the school principal to do a cognitive assessment on Kit for her playbased assessment this week. The psychologist feels uncomfortable doing such a test based on not knowing Kit (they've never met) and because of Kit's poor language/verbal skills. She said she wasn't sure what type of assessment she would use and wanted to touchbase with me prior to the assessment on Wednesday to share her concerns. I haven't spoken directly to the psychologist yet, but will...just wanted to see if anyone knew of a test that would be most appropriate--if there is such a thing--that I could suggest. Thanks. Liam was given the (sp?) by both a school psychologist and developmental pediatrician. I can't say I think it's reliable since the developmental ped. scored him 30% higher than the school psychologist, all within a month or two. The preschool where I work uses the Battelle, the DAYC, the PKBS (both the professional and the parents fill this one out) the Mullen and one other which escapes me at the moment. The Battelle and PKBS get used on every child, the others are used if retesting needs to occur before six months are up since the last testing was done. The Boehm, the DAYC and the Mullen get used for core evals (when I child is being seen and evaluated for the first time). nancy
Guest guest
Jill, Don't let them do an IQ evaluation. It is not required by law and it is also not accurate in a child this young. When Micah was evaluated for pre-school for transition these are the tests we had done. Peabody Developmental motor scale., peabody evaluation scale, Vineland adaptive scale, Bayley scale of infant development. This way they got an idea of where Micah was functioning developmentally but did not get an IQ score which is a more concrete number that (I feel) can be used with prejudice. Where you are functioning at the moment changes. I hope this helps. Loree
