Guest guest
Sierra saw a new audiologist on Tuesday. She did fine with the " listen " for the animal. When it came time for the headphones, she did well on the right ear; but slower on the left side. What she had to do was look for the picture she asked her and point to it. Maybe by the time the left side came, she lost interest?? I did not tell this new doctor about her previous hearing test 3 years ago, since she had a cold at the time of this plus she was only 2 1/2. Because her left ear was boarderline, she did a tymponomy (sp?). The right side showed some peaks (good); but the left ear was a flat line. Usually this means something is blocking it. She checked for ear wax, but it wasn't that. Her ear canals are very, very tiny. It may be fluid, but she hasn't had a cold this month. Her last ear infection was in the spring. Anyone have this happen? There is another test they can do, but with a flat line, you can't run it? She also saw a developmental pediatrician, so they will get together and see about further testing. Secondly, when she saw the developmental pediatrician, he noticed her eyes would turn in when he covered one eye. We've questioned about her eyes before, but when we had the test done at an optometrist and had them dialated, it didn't show anything. I'm not sure exactly what is going on, but it will affect her fine motor skills, as well as tracking. We are scheduled to see another optometrist October 1; as well as an orthopedic specialist and her endocrinologist (busy day, lots of driving). Her cardiologist visit was yesterday and she's wearing a holter monitor today for low heart rate. Her thyroid is out of wack right now, but it may be interferring with her heart rate. It also said low thyroid caused lower muscle tone. Has anyone had this happen or know the connection? Has anyone heard of Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and what tests are there for it? I'm wondering if this is why she has a low white blood cell count mixed with the thyroid problems?? I've been doing some research and found this is a chronic autoimmune condition associated with thyroglobulin (Tg) or anti-thyroid peroxidase (TPO). She has been tested for anti-bodies and came back negative. Thanks so much for your help and feedback. Kris, mom to Sierra 5 1/2 yrs. Guest guest
Yes you can have fluid and not have had a cold. We were just at audiologist last week and had the same thing: fluid with no other symptoms. Because we feel like he may have fluid a lot with no symptoms - we are doing a new set of tubes on Wed. I was surprised but like anything we can FIX! in Dallas Sierra's audiologist visit Sierra saw a new audiologist on Tuesday. She did fine with the " listen " for the animal. Guest guest
Just be sure that you have " reliable " hearing tests done on your children, especially those with fluid and no infections. has complete hearing loss in his right ear, and we don't know for how long or when it initially occurred. He was one of those kids that rarely got sick, but I think he had fluid in his ears at times and we didn't know. He was very defensive with doctors and anything that had to do with testing and even though they gave him hearing tests, I never believe that got a true picture. We finally determined he had hearing loss when he got his 2nd (and last) set of tubes in his ears at age 12. His speech is pretty good, so I'm thinking he lost his hearing later but yet he has always had a head tilt, which might indicate he had hearing loss when he was smaller. Who knows. I just wish he would have been more cooperative earlier but it was a whole tactile issue with him. Thankfully he has grown out of that and is totally fine with doctors, dentists, and eye doctors.....oh and hair cuts too! Just be sure to get their hearing checked regularly! Guest guest
Nic had a history of fluid too but never an infection or cold! It's just that the ear canals are generally smaller in people with DS that they don't drain well on their own. Di Sierra's audiologist visit Sierra saw a new audiologist on Tuesday. Guest guest
Nic is profoundly deaf in 1 ear also. He never sat for the booth tests so we had several ABR's done at different ages to confirm. I feel the ABR is the most rel;iable but they have to be slightly sedated and asleep for the test. When he was 5 months old(his 1st ABR) he fell asleep on his own, the others were done when he was older so they sedated him for them.
