Guest guest
I started this 3 weeks ago, but never got it finished, so I thought now might be a good time while every one is so quiet. Well, I haven't posted in awhile, thought I'd let everyone know how we are doing. I just had Caty's IEP yesterday. It went quite well, I don't have many of the problems that I used to. Caty will be in 7th grade next year. Which means lockers with locks, changing for gym, going to school dances, marching with the 7/8 band in local parades and her dream........ to be in the 1/2 time show at the football game. (well almost, 7/8 grade band " helps " the senior band play the Anthem at Homecoming)....wow it seems like just yesterday she was starting Kindergarten! They got her a laptop that will be used for a communication device. She isn't going to carry it around because she can make her basic needs known. It's going to be for her classroom (and right now at home). It uses software called Boardmaker with Speaking Dynamically Pro It also has a program called Co-Writer on it that has word prediction and voice output. One of our goals is to be able to write an email to Uncle Mark in NC or to one of her friends. Because her speech is so poor, she's never been able to talk much on the phone to friends. But I guess most kids instant message and email anyway, so that's one of her goals. She still has a small button communication device that holds a few seconds of a message. We use it to put things on that happened at home the night before and she wants to tell the kids the next morning at school. On the last day of school, I put on it " Would you sign my yearbook " and you should see her yearbook! It's covered with signatures. I wished I had thought of that last year. At the end of the year concert, she was the 1st person performing (a solo). She did 2 songs that she and the band director made up for her ability. (The band director told the audience that she made up the pieces) I think maybe the director asked Caty what she wanted to do, she showed her and the director put in down on paper.....not sure. She played the snare drums & the bongos. I still tear up when I think about it. In 7/8 grade, you have band every day, not just once a week so we expect even greater things next year! For those of you teaching your children keyboarding skills- we learned this with Caty this year. While she was doing well before, (she was using a program called Typing with Rings), the OT said her hand placement and posture improved greatly when they decided to put a skin (that covers up the letters on the keys) onto the keyboard. Now she has to keep her fingers placed properly or she messes up. She really enjoys it. This year I was hired as a substitute Teacher's Aide-countywide and Caty has handled it very well. In fact, I wished I had tried to be hired a few years ago. When she sees me at school working, she understands she can only say hi and get back in line. She isn't upset she can't be with me. When I worked in her room she also did quite well. Well, didn't mean to write a book. ~ mommy to Caty soon to be 14yr.old ginal Message ----- From: Sent: Wednesday, June 09, 2004 11:04 PM Subject: Y'uns are just too quiet Do I need to drag Tim to his pc to liven things up? --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Guest guest
I have missed you!! I checked my email to see when you had left and when you should have returned...lol....is that bad or what? I bet I know which relative reminded you of your shortcomings I'm a firm believer in KARMA - her day is coming...lol. Thanks for the prayers for . He had minor surgery to remove that tube - the hospital staff was WONDERFUL! We went through the doors three times and of course he wanted to bolt (and did the first two). He started hitting, kicking, scratching, etc. and a nurse came and said " Hi , lets take a walk outside " . The intake person called me over to do the paperwork (ahead of someone else) and by the time I was done, was in a room with two nurses who gave him tons of attention. They had already taken his vitals and got him prepped for surgery. Everyone was so kind and helpful. I did tell them ahead of time about his behaviors and what works (another adult giving him 1:1). Oh yea, when I got in the room, they gave a bandaid to put on my arm (he drew blood when he scratched me) and made a big fuss over me and not him...lol! I also learned that knew how to play tic tac toe and is quite the cheat at it! I got tomorrow off as a holiday and will go to his school and eat lunch with him. His last day is the 16th. Summer school starts in July - but we'll be on vacation then. I'll be praying for , I played catch up on mail this week (since I haven't been able to get online in so long) and I was worried about your man.
