While I work in a home office, I do shop 1x and play pickup sports games 2x a week so I am somewhat exposed to common communicable diseases. While I can't recall the last time I was " stay in bed " sick, I have perceived a few sniffles and the general malaise of about to be sick, but I have often self medicated with a few cloves of garlic and never progressed to full blown sick. This is extremely anecdotal, I suspect as a group we are more careful about cleaning our hands, washing foods, and generally healthful practices. We probably have a more positive attitude, or feel more in control of our lives than our ad lib brethren, which I think is positively associated with immune function. My one rat observation is that I get sick less since I lost some 50#, but that is an association, not necessarily causal. Concern about not having enough fat stores to survive a hospital visit or illness is probably limited to the very lowest BF individuals. JR PS: While I appreciate that the amount of international air travel makes the propagation vectors for a true pandemic infection far more serious today than with the slower travel patterns of say 1917, but we should be able to somewhat mitigate that with better communication/information capability and better technology. At the risk of repeating myself the " Bird flu pandemic " is a fictional TV program (ABC?), so far the bird flu is transmitted by birds killing mainly birds. At this point for us to personally adjust our behavior based on the speculation, may be as useful as all those bomb shelters built back in the '60s. Of course it satisfies our very human desire to control our destiny and " do something " .
