Whole-Grain Foods Can Cut Diabetes Risk

Eating right can also help those who already have the disease

Eating whole-grain foods can significantly reduce the risk of Type II

diabetes, according to medical researchers.

The reduction in risk could be as high as 50 percent, according to a

Harvard Medical School report described in the Chicago Tribune and

reprinted in The Bergen Record. The study shows that those who ate

refined-grain products were much more likely to develop the disease.

The study followed 75,521 women during a 10-year period. Of those women,

1,879 developed diabetes. Refined-grain products showed up as a culprit

after other risk factors were ruled out, according to the article.

Whole-grain foods take longer to digest and don't raise blood sugar

levels as much as refined-grain products. That may be why they seem to

reduce the risk of diabetes, researchers say. Also, whole-grain foods

contain important vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are often

processed out of refined-grain products.

The protective effect was reported for a wide range of whole-grain

products, including dark bread, oatmeal, brown rice, wheat germ and

bran, the article says.

To find out more about diabetes and the difference between Type I and

Type II, you can read this information from the American Diabetic

Association.

Those who have Type I diabetes can also benefit from the right kind of

diet, according to an article from allHealth.com. It recommends a diet

heavy on legumes, vegetables and fish. At the same time, you should

avoid all simple and processed carbohydrates, the story says.
