" Why Stomach Acid is Good for You "

I thought it was on this list that I heard mention of the book " Why Stomach

Acid is Good for You. " However, in searching, I can't find it.

Anyone out there know about this?

Thanks!

Christie

" Why Stomach Acid is Good for You - Natural Relief from Heartburn,

Indigestion, Reflux, and Gerd " by V. , M.D. and Lane

Lenard, Ph.D.

According to the book, most people of middle age (past halfway

actually) experience a declining production of stomach HCl and pepsin

production and actually would benefit from some additional in the form

of dietary capsules. They maintain that the drug companies are

actually harming a lot of people by pushing the stomach acid

suppressing drugs which actually inhibit the digestion of food and

thus leave many people malnourished over the long run. So I ordered

some Betaine HCl caps and received them today. So I'll probably take

one with my evening meal even though I seldom experience stomach upset

- sort as a one creature experiment. I do this with some trepidation

though as I've also been brainwashed by the media into believing

stomach upset should be squashed by some antacid.

So does anyone have any experience with Betaine HCl caps? Or have any

strong opinions about them?

PS

1. This topic could be considered as belonging to the optimal

nutrition part of CRON, thus is somewhat relevant.

2. The above mentioned book was published in 2001 and while perhaps

not at the foreskin of technology is still fairly current.

3. I wonder how many CRON followers are actually malnourished and

don't even know it? X amount of calories * inefficient digestion

!= x amount of calories absorbed and utilized by the body. (Sorry

about the obscure and slightly inaccurate notation.)

Hi All,

See the related pdf-not-availed paper below.

Yi I, Stephan FK.

Body fat reserves attenuate gastric ulcers induced by

restricted feeding in rats.

Physiol Behav. 1996 Apr-May;59(4-5):931-6.

PMID: 8778889 http://tinyurl.com/qbxdl

... Fat reserves were systematically manipulated

by using chow vs. high-fat diets and by using rats of

different ages (3, 7, and 17 months). The ulcerogenic

procedure consisted of limiting food intake to 6 g of

chow per day. For chow-fed rats, 20 days were required

to induce ulcers in 3-month-old rats whereas more than

40 days were required in 7- and 17-month-old rats. In

7-month-old rats fed a high-fat diet, the ulcerogenic

phase lasted 63 days. Virtually no ulcers were found

in control groups with larger body weights that were

yoked to the duration of the ulcerogenic phase.

Measurement of retroperitoneal and epididymal fat pads

indicated that these were nearly depleted in rats with

ulcers whereas some fat remained in ulcer-free rats,

regardless of age, diet, or the duration of the

ulcerogenic phase. These results suggest that the

depletion of fat reserves to a critical level triggers

a metabolic stress response that then produces gastric

ulcers.
