Guest guest
I thought I'd read up on this, since we are getting ready to have our first x-ray in June. (Blake will be almost 4). This is from the paper on AAI on Dr. Len's page.... " If in fact asymptomatic AAI is not the precursor to symptomatic AAI, the current protocol [X-rays at 3, 12, and 18 years of age] should be abandoned. I would suggest that the devastating nature of cord compression and the technical difficulties in assessing children with developmental disabilities has led to the current quandary. " The paper went on to say that the x-ray isn't really reliable in determining AA instability and the paper didn't really indicate how often the screening *should* be done. Guest guest
My doctor told me that it is very dependent on who is taking the xray. The c-spine is a very difficult xray to get a good picture. Kaitlyn's first one at 3 was suspicious. Then we had another done this year and the dr. said it looked better this time, no gap found. She is 10 now. I think you would be wise to check more than once but I doubt that every year would be necessary. For certain, if your child is going to become involved in a sport or activity where there would be risk of injury. All kids with down syndrome must be checked prior to joining special olympics. There is a special form just for that purpose. Darcy AAInstability I thought I'd read up on this, since we are getting ready to have our first x-ray in June. (Blake will be almost 4). She knew her parents wouldn't let her so she signed the note herself and took it back. Trouble was she printed it " MOM " . oops.
