Guest guest
Being fairly new to the south (N.C.) I believe I have a rather unique question or two for "ya all". A couple of years ago we purchased a home in a wooded area north of Durham NC. Having always before lived in the Siberian-like wilds of Northern NY, I am used to being able to walk in the woods wherever I please and even sit on the forest floor without any concern about poisenous snakes. Yes, they were there, but so rare that they might as well have been non-existent. Well my wife just found a foot long Copperhead on my front walkway. It is the second we have seen on the property in as many years. Since my wife does gardening within inches of where the snake was sunning itself, we both were not exactly thrilled with her discovery. Although the web indicates that the bites are "rarely fatal" to humans, I thought, what about us ICD folks. Would the effects be more death threatening for us? I suspect so. My questions: Anyone had experience with a poisonous snake bite especially copperhead who also had an ICD? Anyone work in an emergency room or has medical experience who could shed some light on the subject? With these type snakes more common here, anything we should do differently, or be prepared to do differently such as having anti-venom on hand?
