Guest guest
Mav hasn't gotten any OT for years. He has PT as a " consultation " and she also observes any OT needs if there is a concern. Unfortunately, there is no one there he knows enough to have any concerns....and most of the things don't have anything to do with her " functioning in a school enviormnent " so the school isn't concerned anyway. ¸...¸ __/ /\____ ____ ,·´º o`·,/__/ _/\_ //____/\ ```)¨(´´´ | | | | | | | || |l±±±± | ¸,.-·²°´ ¸,.-·~·~·-.,¸ `°²·-. :º° As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. 24:
Guest guest
still gets OT at school - at least 60 minutes a week. In addition to the OT, he gets Pet Therapy (with OT) through a service provided by a non profit organization (something Katey's best friend and her parents founded). He also has speech therapy (the best ST yet!), to address oral motor, articulation, etc., individually and in groups. For the first time ever, we have a real team working on related services. The PT observes from time to time to make recommendations for modifications (like a foot rest). Re: School related services Mav hasn't gotten any OT for years. Guest guest
Kathy, Now that Sheila is in 10th grade our district has finally reduced her number of OT services. Up until this year she had 3 per week. This year it is on consultant basis only. The OT comes into her home ec class once a week to consult with the teacher, but she also comes in another time per week to consult with the teacher for another young person with DS. I decided it just took more energy then I wanted to spend to keep OT at the psat level when transition and adulthood is looming ahead of us. nancy
Guest guest
Hey, Well, we've been having such a hard time this year getting services for amanda, or the other kids at her school for that matter. They just hired a PT- its only feb. They are still interviewing for an OT. Big issue here is that there is a shortage in the schools. The bd of ed will pay if you get an outside person (its called RSA- related service something), but it means arranging it on your own time. I feel it is amanda's right to recieve her services at school and us not scheduling one more thing for her. So last year, she NEVER got PT- i ran out of energy. This year because of the lack of OT, I find that her school work is suffering more because time she could be spending in OT - like her fine motor skills in writing or keyboarding, is spent during the class time during academics. The schools will try and reduce the services in middle schools because they just dont have the staffing- hold strong and dont reduce if you dont have to. Once you reduce, you cant get them back. i even kept in Adaptive Phys Ed- even though they tell me they dont have APE teachers in middle school. I did that for 2 reasons- last year they pulled her out into a small group during gym and if any thing happens to her in gym- they are liable. They are usually good about accomadating us in a small group for gym, though. This whole education process is a never ending battle- sigh- for those of us in NYC- its a nightmare this year, sorry. Guest guest
Stef never received OT or PT. One thing you might want to keep in mind as they move to middle school is how to open lockers, zip pouches for pens and pencils, three ring binders.
