Guest guest
I couldn't aggree more... we do not have healthcare or health insurance, we have sick care and illness/injury insurance. Obviously, our bodies have the internal capability to renew, restore, and correct to a point (after so many cell divisions they die- cellular apoptosis). This is not a chiropractic philosophy, this is fact, but not all people have the same healing response or ability to maintain homeostasis, due to many factors including genetics, nutrition, exposure to toxins, past injury.... Supporting the body with proper nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, proper sanitation and the like has been a part of the chiropractic appoach since the beginning (and just improving sanitation has saved more lives than all the antibiotics prescribed!). But how do we take the next step, advocating regular adjustments to symptom-free individuals to improve wellness and delay the onset of degnerative disease? I know, "we don't treat symptoms, we treat the patient". But symptoms and signs guide care. That is why blood pressure is taken. That is why lab work is ordered and x-rays are performed. So what dictates wellness care? How do we as a profession quantify and identify in a consistent manner the vertebral subluxation complex? And how does the findings relate to health and wellness? I'm not asking for chiropractic scripture or borrowed science, I'm asking for specific scientific support of our approach to supporting the healing efforts of the body through chiropractic manipulation. How should we measure the VSC? Manual muscle testing? Motion-palpation? X-ray? DTG? EMG? Aura???? I personally evaluate segmental joint motion and muscle tone with motion palpation and palpation. I identify restrictions and restore segmental joint motion and improve global ROM with manipulation and mobilization, manual stretching and TrP compression. Do I improve global body health? I think so, but how do I know for sure? How do you know? And if current insurance covers injury or disease, not health maintenance, how can I encourage the patient to pay for care out-of-pocket without more support than "belief"? In health! Guest guest
Well put Dr. , and many thanks for the information. Now, what do we do about it? J. Pedersen DC Sweet Home US "Health Care" Spending (LONG) Dear docs here is some food for thought................Most recent govt statistics (CMS 2003)show the following:(Please take the time to try to digest this folks, this is not a cut and paste, i wrote it myself and the info is actually pretty darned accurate):-USA Healthcare spending for 2002: $1.6 Trillion!! (equates to about $5500! for every man woman and child in USA or $22,000/year for a family of four!)-This is the total amount of money spent on 'health care ' services. This makes "health care" the largest industry (by far) in the United States.- This figure represents about 14.1% of the gross domestic product. In other words, one out of every SEVEN dollars spent in USA ( by individuals, bussiness, organizations and government) is spent on so-called "health care services".-Further breakdown shows that out of the 1.6 trillion- (hospital-based services was 486 billion [30.4%], out-patient physician (MD/DO) services was 340 billion [21%], out-patient drug costs are 162 billion [10%], the other 39% is comprised of lots of different categories including PT, OT, home-health services, hospice, dental, chiropractic etc etc.BTW the approximate total spending on chiropractic care is a whopping 12 billion or approx 0.75% of all health care or approx $41.25 for every person in USA/year!!!-46% of the healthcare bill was paid by government mainly medicare and medicaid (remember this money comes primarily from taxes).-35% of the bill was paid by private insurance.-15% was paid by individuals out-of-pocket-So, looking at that average of $24000/year spent for the family of four: -approx $3600 of the bill for health care is direct out-of-pocket expense. -approx $8400 is paid by insurance companies (remember, cost of premiums are shared by individual and employer) - approx $11000!!!! of their federal and state and other taxes goes toward paying for healthcare (usually for someone elses).Folks this is outrageous!!!!!!!!!!!!!Here are my own personal conclusions:1) Despite what politicos are saying, we really dont' have a health care crisis or a malpractice insurance premium crisis, or prescription-drug cost crisis, or health insurance premium crisis. NO, WE HAVE A NATIONAL HEALTH CRISIS! And the only solution, is for massive change in the belief and behavior of the population! There is NO other solution to the economic choke hold that our bad behavior has caused on our economy.2) Most of the money spent is spent on a few very sick folks (look at hospital costs). Essentially taking them from the brink of death to a place where they are "a few steps" away or a "stone's throw" from death, over and over again.3) Much of the money is spent, not on curing or healing but just on managing a "condition" (look at how pharmaceutical usage has skyrocketed)4) Nationalizing health care is NOT going to solve this problem!!! Heck the government already foots nearly half (46%)of the bill via our taxes!!!! Medicare and medicaid are their biggest projects and they are both a disaster!4)Conservative and cost-effective chiropractic care is WAY UNDERUTILIZED, it is a crumb under the table. (less than 1%)5) Chiropractors must strive to become leaders in a "thought revolution" in the USA. We must hang tough to the traditional concept in chiropractic that says "The power that made the body, heals the body." We must give people back the faith in their bodies, minds and spirits, because the powers-that-be have convinced them that the effort isn't worth it. We must be holisitic and lead by example. We must live healthy lives ourselves and show each and every patient what they are doing right and what they are doing wrong!! But it starts with a belief system......most people don't have a clue what true health is.....they think that health is the absence of medical conditions or abherrant lab readings. This is just wrong, but this is what folks believe so this is what the so-called "healthcare" industry has given them.6) No, there is no "health care" crisis. Because to have a health care crisis you have to have a "health care" industry. In the USA, we don't have a health care industry we have a "sickness-management" industry!!So, docs which industry are you a part of? The health-care industry (emphasizing true health, self-responsibility, inspiring these people to get off the duffs and change, wellness promotion etc) or the "sickness-management" industry that grows and grows the more the nation's physical, mental and social health declines?!?! This is just wrong, but this is what folks believe so this is what the >so-called " healthcare " industry has given them. > >6) No, there is no " health care " crisis. Because to have a health care crisis >you have to have a " health care " industry. In the USA, we don't have a health >care industry we have a " sickness-management " industry!! > >So, docs which industry are you a part of? The health-care industry >(emphasizing true health, self-responsibility, inspiring these people to get off the >duffs and change, wellness promotion etc) or the " sickness-management " industry >that grows and grows the more the nation's physical, mental and socia! l health >declines?!?! > > > J. , DC >Springbrook Chiropractic > & Natural Health Center >1015 N.
