Guest guest
will soon be participating in her schools 5th grade science fair. She participates in everything the other students do so theres no getting out of this! Anyone have any ideas for simple projects. We are thinking about a plant related thing. It of course has to be something concrete so she understands it. Thanks in advance, Kathy

Anyone have any ideas for simple projects My mom was a science teacher so I got lots of great ideas from watching the fairs she ran. If you want plants you can root a potato, avocado pit, or pineapple. You can take simple identical plants -- Put one in full sun (turning or not can demonstrate heliotropism -- the tendency for plants to leen towards the sun) and one in shade to compare growth. Some plants like dyffenbacia will grow roots in soil or water. Beans are easy to grow -- she could show how to grow bean sprouts. Some of my favorite science fair exhibits have been weather, atomic structure and the solar system. I remember one disasterous exhibit where a heart simulating pump spewed red food die colored water all over the place. Cauliflowers look very similar to brains and with a little imagination.... One year I brought in my baby tropical fish to show how I had bred them to lose the hybrid color traits the breeders had raised their parents to have. Science was fun in our house.
