If he learns what he needs to learn for k, then possibly repeating would be boring for him or unstimulating. Also, if he's got some good friends now, he may be with them again next year if he goes on to 1st grade. My daughter was held over in grade 1, which proved to be the right decision at the time. Guest guest
Kenzie (8DS) repeated K and it was the best decision we have made. She needed the extra year for maturity reasons. The first year she was in a special needs K and the second year she was in a reg ed K. It was a wonderful experience for all of us!! Good LUCK!! Guest guest
Hi, I have not listed a message in a long time. I would like to know if any of you had your child with Down syndrome repeat kindergarten. (Or the school wanted you to) Why did you have them repeat? How did the second year of kindergarten go? Those of you who did not have the child do kindergarten again, how did 1st grade go? This is Steve's 1st year of kindergarten and he is doing well he is meeting goals and learning a lot. The school at the last IEP was talking about moving him to 1st grade and I am not sure if that is what I want him to do or not. Thank you for responding. Guest guest
Kaitlyn's kindergarten teacher recommended that she repeat kindergarten. Her reasoning was that she was making good progress on reading and she thought that one more year would really make 1st grade go great. We took her advice. Unfortunately, our district rezoned and Kaitlyn did not get the same school and in the new school our kindergarten teachers were lousy. The resource teacher didn't have a clue and the year was wasted. She did make good friends in the class and that has been good. This class is perhaps better at including Kaitlyn than the other would have been. (We'll never know) If you have a good teacher repeating is worth it. In my case it was a case of the whole staff at the new school did not have a clue. First grade didn't go any better. If I were you, I would look at all the factors. Will he gain from repeating? How are his personal relationships with the classmates? Is it worth breaking them up? What is the first grade teacher like? Will she work with your child as well as the kindergarten teacher? How close to grade level is he performing? How much modifying will need to be done? Will one more year of kindergarten lessen that amount? Good luck, these decisions are difficult for parents. Guest guest
In our school district they believe in pushing our kids through without retaining. They wanted to move onto 1st grade after one year of kindergarten. He went half day kindergarten and then the other half of the day he was in a life skills classroom. It was a wonderful thing. I called a meeting at the end of the first year after I caught wind that they wanted to move on to discuss retaining him. I was met with a little resistance, but did manage to convince them to let him repeat....but with a different kindergarten teacher. I loved his kindergarten teacher, but I thought the earlier dealt with the " change " of teacher the better and maybe some different approaches would yield even more results academically for . We pointed out at this meeting that we felt it was more important for to really nail the basics....colors, numbers, letters, etc. than " save " the extra years our children are entitled to till the end of his school career, which is what the school's thoughts were. They told us the extra years could be spent at job cites, votech, etc. I told them I felt it was too early to determine that these things were what he would need 12 years from then. I wanted to deal with the " now " and push as much academics as possible while their brains are still sponges. They even tried the socialization angle with me saying no kids would know him in kindergarten, but that wasn't true either, because some knew him from preschool experiences when I had retained him there. I pointed out, and what subsequently happened, was he would not only get to know a whole new class of kindergarten students, but would also be known and recognized by the first graders he did his first year of kindergarten with! It doubled the amount of students who knew , loved him, and cared about him! It was the best decision I ever made and I have never regretted retaining him that one year. is extremely well know by the grade ahead of him and also his own. is just known and accepted very well in our community as a whole. We are very fortunate. Jackie, Mom to 16ds, 13, and Bradley
Guest guest
Hi Becca. We kept in kindergarten for an extra year. Guest guest
Hi, My name is and my son Luke repeated Kindergarten because the teacher [at the time] felt he would do better if he repeated the class. He was progressing at a fairly good pace that year. His speach skills were not doing as well and was the reason she gave me to hold him back. He did not do very well the next year at all. When he did go to the next class [the following year] he did tremendously better. I feel it was a mistake to keep him back that year. I'm not sure if it was the teacher or if he got bored and the class did not challenge him enough. (Mom to Luke 11 DS) Hi, I have not listed a message in a long time. Guest guest
's sped teacher at the time did not feel it would benefit to repeat kindergarten. She had the basic skills down we felt she needed, and she had come so far in socialization and behavior that we felt it would be detrimental to hold her back. If she repeated again, she would be starting with young 5 year olds, some of whom had just turned 5 within the last 6 weeks before school. She would also be with some kids who had never been to an organized school program. We were worried that her behavior gains she had made in the last year would deteriorate, because of the peer group she would be with if she repeated. went on to first grade, and did very well. Looking back, we made the right decision. Sharon H.
