Healing Yoga: Coping with Addiction

Yoga has many applications that are health related, some of which are quite surprising. For instance, did you know that yoga has been effectively used to treat addiction? The reason yoga works is fairly simple. The core issue in overcoming addiction is controlling the impulses we have that make us gravitate toward the desired substance. Yoga can help us quell those compulsive urges by introducing the idea that comfort (or, at least, tolerance) can be achieved during uncomfortable physical and emotional states. That requires patience, which ultimately leads to impulse control. In fact, learning to control impulses can benefit all of us, whether or not we suffer from addiction. True freedom — the freedom promised by yoga — can be attained when we break free of impulses and learn to make conscious choices about our lives. So the next time you practice yoga, bear in mind that you're doing more than just stretching or strengthening your body — you're giving yourself the tools to fight impulses and addiction now and in the future.
