Guest guest
I too, have been interested in yerba mate and have been looking to buy some online (I do not have a whole foods or any local source to buy any). My problem is I am finding SO MANY different kinds and it is very confusing. My daughter spent time in Paraguay where they drank it all the time. The kinds that she said she had there that were very good, I have not been able to find. Any suggestions for specific brands/kinds? Guest guest
EcoTeas makes an organic unsmoked Yerba Mate with green tea, both regular and decaf. I'm about to try a cup of the tea alone and will let you know of the taste! ________________________________ From: Sue F <ctrydnc@...> kombucha tea Sent: Tue, May 11, 2010 2:30:15 PM Subject: Re: yerba mate  I too, have been interested in yerba mate and have been looking to buy some online (I do not have a whole foods or any local source to buy any). Guest guest
Sue, I would look for a source that gets it from Southern Brazil. I have damage to the nerve that goes from my inner ear to my brain. When I drink too much caffeine I get loud tinnitus, chirping and clicking in that ear. I find the Yerba Mate from Southern Brazil very smooth and less bothersome to that nerve, so I deduce that caffeine is hard on our nerves and I happen to have a built in meter. With other Yerba Mate I clinched my teeth. However, all that said maybe it doesn't really matter where the tea comes from because it's being made into KT. I did Google mate teas and found lots of sources. There are different kinds because it is grown in many different regions of the world, but I don't really know what you mean by different kinds. Guest guest
Organic, and Unsmoked aged over 9 months at least, buy in my local healthfood store here. Eco Tea is a reputable, family owned, eco concious Co. in Oregon. They use the leaves only..I can get it from my healthfood store, and if you go to their site you can do a search for closest store near you, it is less expensive that way.I think Organic is very impotant, and it is unsmoked, yet a robust flavor. wwww.ecoteas.com (sorry i cant make it click on) > > > > > > > > where do you get the yerba mate tea from? > > > > > > The first from a friend, the second, Graham ordered me on line .... > > > there are quite a few UK sites, but it's worth shopping around, there > > > are significant price differences. Guest guest
Hi Kathleen Thanks for your response. My dilemma is there are just so many different brands and varieties available, and not knowing anything about yerba mate really is just very confusing to me. When I do get some, eventually, I will probably use it for KT, but I also want to just drink it as is, so I want something that I will enjoy the taste of. I guess I just don't know how to tell if I will like a particular kind or not, or what to look for. I will just have to keep looking and hopefully find small amounts a reasonable prices that I can try ane figure out what I like. Your mention of your nerve damage and tinnitus was very interesting. My sister suffered sudden, unexplained deafness accompanied by horrible tinnitus in one ear over a year ago. Many doctors and many tests and many treatments have done no good at all. I will mention the caffeine thing to her. Never know, it just might help. Thanks again, Sue > > Sue, > > I would look for a source that gets it from Southern Brazil. Guest guest
Hi Jahjet, Actually, Eco tea was one brand high on my consideration list. I have read reviews of yerba mate where some find the smoky flavor undesireable so I liked the fact that it is unsmoked. Having somebody else recommend it is a real plus. I have been to their site and placed an order but have put off completing the checkout just because I wasn't sure yet. I will now go back there and probably finish checking out this time. Thanks alot! Guest guest
Hi Sue, Yerba Mate tea is not particularly tasty. I drink it for the L-Theanine effect, it's an appetite suppressant, and it's nutritious. I don't like the smoked version. It's good in a tea blend, though. I like 'Greener Green' Tea yerba mate blend. It makes great KT mixed with half blk tea. My nerve damage occurred during a bout of 18 hours of horrid vertigo. If I don't consume any caffeine the ringing quiets completely. Some caffeine has very wicked effects on the nervous system. Kathleen Hi Kathleen Thanks for your response. Guest guest
Hi Again, Thanks for the recommendation. I really like green tea which I started drinking for the health benefits and to give me something else to drink besides coffee. My reason for wanting to try yerba mate is also for the health benefits (and appetite suppressant property). This sounds like something I might like. I will definately check that one out! Thanks again, Sue > > Hi Sue, > > Yerba Mate tea is not particularly tasty. I drink it for the L-Theanine effect, it's an appetite suppressant, and it's nutritious. I don't like the smoked version. Guest guest
Great, Sue. Let us know how you like it. Guayaki is my favorite - it's the smoothest yerba mate......Kathleen Well, I placed my order. I got both the Greener Green by Guayaki and the Eco Tea non smoked yerba mate. The best deals I could find were on Amazon with my free prime shipping. Only thing is I had to get 6 boxes of each! Sure hope I like it, but I really think I will after reading the reviews. I am looking forward to getting and trying them. Thanks again for your help and opinions! Guest guest
I think there's a distinction to be drawn between "energy" and "stimulus." Energy is what's produced from burning fuel (e.g., food); yerba maté, on the other hand, contains large amounts of a caffeine-like substance and will give you a buzz similar to that of coffee (I guess--I hate coffee and never drink it). I've actually never had it because it's supposed to be bitter although one of my school friends kinda likes it and was going to bring me some to try (he hasn't yet). Rishi carries it, which is how I first became aware of its existence (Whole Foods here carries their brand). If you go to their site, they probably have directions for preparation. Yerba Mate I just went on YouTube and saw them drinking this out of a gourd with a special straw. I thought it was a tea and I have a small tea strainer diffuser but this looks like it has powder in it. I just bought one oz. to try. Any suggestion for preparations such as amounts? One teaspoon or more per cup of drink and do you add any sweetner to it? All the Youtubers were claiming how much energy it provides. Thanks in advance. Guest guest
Even sweetened, don't think yerba mate will be my drink of choice, but thanks for all the information. If you don't try, you don't know.
Guest guest
Well, I'm an idiot. Stevia IS listed (under "supplement facts"), so it's a good thing I didn't scream at anyone. I did, however, suggest that they not sweeten the product at all and pointed out that they'd spelled "proprietary" incorrectly, so it wasn't a total wash. Guest guest
Wow, I had no idea it was so good for you. Between the asthma stuff, the relaxation/anxiety stuff, and the appetite control/weight loss stuff, it sounds like exactly what I need to add to my life. I'm low on tea anyway, and I'm so glad that I didn't have time to get to the store yesterday as I had planned! Now I know what to stock up on.  Thanks Margret! Guest guest
HI,I don't know when this thread started, but yerba mate is good for you. My father was a yerba mate drinking Scot and my mother an Argentinian. My Argentinian side of the family has an estancia (ranch) where yerba mate is grown. They also grow tea ( camellia sinensis) pretty good stuff, but it's practically all sold for export, so they never send me any. The ranch is in the north of the country, and I live in the south, pretty far away. Yerba mate I can get in any store in my city.
