Guest guest
Lea Ann, That's great! That is the price I was looking for with a refurbished. I will let you know when my birthday gets here. Thanks. Re: Re: Refurbs vs. QVC model The red machines are sold in brown boxes - did you order red? If it was black or white I have no idea why it came in that box. I also have no idea why the red machines are sold in that ugly box. Guest guest
I am a very happy owner of TWO refurbished VM's purchased through Lea Ann...and I've a friend who bought a refurb for her daughter for Christmas (also through Lea Ann)... $379 + tax... And here's a little tale of my FIRST VM purchased in August 1997 at Air Force Base exchange for $379 which was NOT a refurb but served my husband and I well until about a year ago when it started making a shrill noise while on high. My husband thought it sounded like the " bearings " were gone (whatever those are) and luckily my daughter lives 15 minutes from the VM company...we we brought out machine to the company to be checked out..there were two options since it was out of warranty..we chose the complete overhaul option for $149...everything new including a new container new motor and a whole host of new stuff...all done in 1/2 hour. That machine stayed at my daughter's home and I'm happy to say it is getting a nice workout for our grandkids. We are definitely a VM family and wouldn't even consider being without our machine... Guest guest
If you have a double boiler, if you can find an Ohsawa pot to fit it, your rice will come out like that in (east) Asian restaurants, or at least brown rice will. I've never used it for white rice but I'm sure it would work. Also, the rice--white and brown--served in Chinese and Japanese restaurants is usually short-grain, which cooks up a LOT different than long grain. Thai restaurants tend to use jasmine rice. Guest guest
I've had mine since 1988 and the newer ones are a lot nicer. No need to buy another electrical appliance and cooking time is reduced if you soak overnight. Just keep an eye on your cooker until it comes up to pressure, then turn it down to maintain it and set your timer. At most it's 50 minutes, reduced to 30 with presoaking. I wouldn't mind a rice cooker but that's just because I'm a gadget junkie--this works just fine and you can also make layered hot pot dishes with grains and pulses. No need to worry about your pressure cooker's release valve getting clogged, either, because the steam is only water. Re: Re: Refurbs vs. QVC model Well, I'll know if I ever get a red one which I would like.lol I purchased one from another web site and didn't know it was an older one, got a 4500, it's ok, waiting for the day I can get a newer one.lol
Guest guest
Nope, I just use the Ohsawa cooking pot. A lot easier to clean than my hulk of a pressure cooker and no fear of clogging the valve. VERY easy. But give regular pressure cooking of your rice a try. I have a very cute rice steamer that I found on eBay that was a promotion from the Comet Rice company and it works great. However, it's aluminum and it's just about as easy to use my pressure cooker combo. It's adorable, though! Guest guest
Sorry that I didn't answer you sooner...you asked a very good question...and STUPIDLY I didn't ask when they did the refurb of my unit... I also want to tell you what I did with my refurb unit we use when we are up in OH...and which I think is about 1 1/2 years old...I cleaned it out and apparently didn't tighten the blade unit tight enough and when i made a smoothie it leaked all over the place and <gulp> also into the motor section of the unit. I didn't know it at first after I cleaned up the whole machine, but when i went to make a smoothie later the machine started up and then quit...died...didn't work at all. Fortunately we were up in OH so we brought the machine (still under warranty) to the company. I was up front with what i had done and fully expected to pay for a rehab. They fixed me up with a new motor and sent me on my way in 20 minutes...no charge. I can't say enough good things about customer service! I also know how lucky we are that my daughter and family live 5 minutes away from VM company. I intend to stop by in the spring and pick up some of those wonderful skinny spatulas.connie in FLOn Jan 7, 2011, at 10:11 PM, wrote: Gee, considering they even threw in the container, that's a good deal. Guest guest
Not stupid, just asked by someone who has been there (although not with Vitamix). And I'm sure if you call them, they'll tell you. Vitamix is the poster child for fabulous customer service. And BTW, another nice company to deal with is Plastaket, the company that manufactures Champion juicers. Theirs is an excellent product (10-year warranty) and they care very much about keeping their customers happy. I always recommend that those new to juicing who are sure they'll stick with it buy a Champion. Mine is still running and it's almost 23 years old. Re: Re: Refurbs vs. QVC model I am a very happy owner of TWO refurbished VM's purchased through Lea Ann...and I've a friend who bought a refurb for her daughter for Christmas (also through Lea Ann)... $379 + tax... And here's a little tale of my FIRST VM purchased in August 1997 at Air Force Base exchange for $379 which was NOT a refurb but served my husband and I well until about a year ago when it started making a shrill noise while on high. My husband thought it sounded like the "bearings" were gone (whatever those are) and luckily my daughter lives 15 minutes from the VM company...we we brought out machine to the company to be checked out..there were two options since it was out of warranty..we chose the complete overhaul option for $149...everything new including a new container new motor and a whole host of new stuff...all done in 1/2 hour. That machine stayed at my daughter's home and I'm happy to say it is getting a nice workout for our grandkids. We are definitely a VM family and wouldn't even consider being without our machine...
