Hi, everyone. I'm new here, and a happy new owner of a Vitamix blender. :DI have been getting by with my old Waring blender for a long time, and it has been doing just that - just getting me by. I don't have a food processor - mine died several years ago. So. I've been thinking that I was due a new kitchen gadget, and figured that it oughtta be a whoppin' good one. I did my research. I compared the two biggies - the Blendtec and the Vitamix. They both had their pros and cons... ultimately I decided that I would be happy with either one, so I just went with the one that my gut leaned toward - the Vitamix. I've been making green smoothies in my Waring for several months now. I thought they tasted quite good. I just wasn't very fond of chewing the spinach in my smoothies. I absolutely loooove the fact that the Vitamix makes my smoothies so, well, smooth. I just made a smoothie for my 13 year old son. My son is in a phase where he just doesn't pay attention to anything. ANYTHING. A minute later, he darted back into the kitchen to comment with great enthusiasm about how awesome his smoothie was. Exact same ingredients as before I had the Vitamix. Awesome.I remember some years ago I used to watch Kennedy's cooking shows. She never used a food processor, but rather said that all you really need is a blender. She made the most delectable looking sauces and foods, always using her blender. I cannot wait to start trying out her recipes. (If you're wondering who Kennedy is, here's a little blip about her from Wikipedia... " Kennedy is an author and authority on Mexican cooking. A native of the United Kingdom, she moved to Mexico in 1957 with her husband, Kennedy, who was a correspondent for the New York Times. She has been called the " Child of Mexican Cuisine" and has spent 45 years traveling through Mexico researching cooking techniques and the history of Mexican cuisine. Her first cookbook was published in 1972. She currently resides in the state of Michoacán."All this to say, I have no doubts whatsoever that I will love my Vitamix for many years to come and that I will get the utmost use out of it. Oh, and it looks like we've got a little Texan clan of us here on the group - I'm in Pflugerville, right outside of Austin. :)FrannyOh, one more thing... my daughter has celiac disease, and while I don't have it YET, I will be getting the dry blade container soon so that we can make our own gluten free rice, bean, etc. flours at home. Welcome, Franny. My best friend on the planet lives in Pflugerville! I tease her mercilessly about the name of it. So glad you joined us! As a side bar, you mention that your lil fella loses focus a bit-have you considered removing dyes and food colorants from his diet? Worked a WORLD of wonders with my son, who is now 26. When he was 9, he was almost unmanageable-food dyes were the culprit 100 percent!

, my best friend in the world lives here in Pflugerville, too - but ours is a funny story. All through high school we were basically connected at the hip. But after high school, going to different colleges, we drifted apart. She married into the military, and moved around a lot. Last I knew, she lived in San Diego. About a year and a half ago, I got a friend request on Facebook from her. I was SO HAPPY to hear from her! Then we both about fell over dead when we realized that we both live in Plfugerville now!! We are so happy to be reunited again - just like all those years apart just didn't happen. :DAbout my son - I was really kidding about his lack of attention. He has, however, developed severe migraines ever since he had H1N1 last fall (in 2009). We've done all sorts of things, looking at his diet - taking this and that out - to see if any foods have been the culprit. So far, we have come up dry. We haven't look at or tried removing food colorants, though.Franny(sorry to be so off topic :) )On Jan 4, 2011, at 1:00 PM, Berry wrote:

SAME exact story with my friend. I will crack up if she turns out to be the same gal, lol. You might give the colorants and additives a thought. Does he eat a lot of cheese? The annatto colorant used in cheese is a common culprit for headaches. Just a thought.

Now THAT would be an amazing coincidence! Is your friend's name Kata?I hadn't heard that before about annatto colorant. My son sure does like cheese on his burgers. Interesting information...FrannyOn Jan 4, 2011, at 1:27 PM, Berry wrote:

Close, her name is Celia! You might try switching your son's cheese to uncolored to see if there is any change. I recommend CABOT brand white cheddar. Worth a shot. Keeping a food journal helps LOADS, since reaction may not show up for up to 72 hours after exposure-one of the reasons food allergies are hard to diagnose. By the time you have a reaction, you may have forgotten what you ate three days ago!

Oh, my. A year or two ago, Cabot had a competition batch of cloth-bound cheddar that was only available from one vendor here--my friend Anne Saxleby. It was SUBLIME. I served it once at a post-colloquium party and I saw grown men fall to their knees (I even bought a half-pound for myself). They haven't come up with a batch that good since. :(

Oh, drool! I would love to sample that! I make most of my own cheeses now, and I wrap in cloth, but I have never quite been able to replicate certain cheeses, no matter how much I try.

Hello Franny,I'm glad your "gut" led you to the Vitamix :-)When you are ready to order the dry blade container I can get you Free Shipping if you order through me - and of course the commission goes towards my kid's college education (or the bill to fix the air conditioning in my car) whichever pulls on your heartstrings more ;-) (that is my sarcastic wink BTW ;-)

Just chiming in here - the hommus recipe in the book that comes with the Vitamix is really good. I use tahini instead of the sesame seeds, only because I have some in the pantry. Everyone that has tasted it raves about it, and it is SO creamy and smooth. I made one the other day and added some fat free sundried tomatoes to it, and it turned it the palest pink and it also went down a treat. It seems to keep well for a few days in the fridge too, which is good, as it makes a huge batch.

I tried to make a crust for a raw fruit pie (http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/2009/06/how-to-make-a-raw-fruit-pie/) in my VitaMix on Christmas day but it overheated and switched off (not really surprisingly) so I had to add some water to the mix - it made it alot softer than I normally have but it was still really good. So I decided that I still need a food processor to work alongside my VM so treated myself to a Magimix. There is a lot of crossover between the 2 appliances, but I like that it can slice and grate and make a raw fruit pie crust!

Franny, I am celiac too and make all of my own flour in the dry blade container. It works a CHARM! I will make the finest flour out of whatever you toss in it! I am happy to share gluten free/allergy free recipes. I have many. I highly recommend ordering it from Lea Ann-best deal going on it.

It looks so nice in my kitchen, which has red and gold wallpaper, and ALL red appliances. It was the missing link! I even have a cheeky red electric bread machine that matches the VM perfectly!

Amazon sent me a Breadman free to review but it's stainless. Red would be nicer.

Good fun for free though. I thought you weren't a bread fan?

"Free" is the operative word here.

Actually, I have my jar of stored sour milk warming to room temperature as we speak because I plan to make wheaten later (for those who don't know, but I'm guessing Bren does, this is the Northern Irish term for wholemeal soda bread). I buy Odlums flour from an Irish grocer in Queens (that's staffed by both Orangemen and ROIers--everyone cooperates here to make a living) so I get a pretty authentic result.
