Healing Yoga: Proper Hydration

It's true — our bodies are approximately 75 percent water, and, as you may well know, keeping the body well hydrated is essential to physical well-being. Ayurveda, yoga's sister science, goes so far as to credit water with enhancing memory, awareness, and even consciousness. In other words, water really is the essence of life, and consuming appropriate amounts of it can boost our immune system, relieve our bodies of toxins, and help us flush out illness when we do become sick. Like Western medicine, Ayurveda recommends that we drink seven or eight glasses of pure water — filtered or spring — every day. This quantity is necessary, from an Ayurvedic viewpoint, to sweep away toxins (ama) and to ensure that the body's vital energies flow smoothly. If such a high level of water consumption is difficult for you, try breaking it down into sections of the day. Drink one or two glasses when you rise every morning, and then one additional glass every couple of hours. Remember, herbal tea counts, too! Having a cup of non-caffeinated tea before bed can be a great way to get that last 8 ounces in the body before you rest, renew, and purify.
