Healing Yoga: Stabilizing Joints

If you've ever had an injury in your knee, your shoulder, or another of the body's more vulnerable joints, you've probably heard a doctor or a physical therapist tell you that it's time to strengthen the muscles around that joint. By strengthening the surrounding muscles, you stabilize the joint during the healing process and long after. Luckily, yoga is terrific for strengthening the muscles around an injury. But even if you aren't injured, the strength yoga can bring to your body will make your joints more supple and prevent possible future injuries. Yoga is ideal for joint health because it gently opens and stretches the connective tissue of the joints while also strengthening the muscles surrounding the joint. So the joint stays supple, flexible, and strong even as your body gets older. Because of this, you can think of yoga as a commitment: A practice you do for good health now and in the future.
