Do milk grains last more than a few generations in coconut milk? Should some be cultivated in dairy milk for future use?

Re: Coconut Kefir/yogurt

You are most welcome, Joyce. I should have some fresh milk kefir grains fairly soon (few weeks). I will send them to you for shipping cost only-no charge for the grains (that works out to around 4 or 5 dollars=I pack them in a glass jar) I have made coconut kefir with thai green coconut and WATER KEFIR grains, which I don't have. You can make a yummy coconut type yogurt though, by just pureeing some coconut and adding it to milk kefir or kefir yogurt.

It is super expensive in the stores, $1.99 for an 8 oz. container, so it's really out of my price range. And , I would like to buy some kefir grains from you if you give me your ebay info. Also, thanks for all your emotional support here and on the allergy group site :)

Since coconut milk is not really a milk, I only use water kefir grain for making it-I have never used it with my dairy kefir grains. I sweeten the coconut milk with a little agave nectar to feed the water kefir grains. I have only ever used raw cow or goat milk with my milk kefir grains. I'm pretty sure that the milk grains can be used with coconut milk and the water grains with coconut water, too. But I don't think the milk grains last too long in coconut milk and that backup grains should be kept in dairy.

Having lots of fun with my four new cultures--very easy to manage. :)
