I think any club is cliquey. That's why my husband goes to the

meetings.....LOL. We found a club that accepted Mav, and allowed that there

were times

that we were going to be more involved with him/his project, and there were

going to be times that he was going to do it on his own and not do it perfectly

and went with that club. One of the things they have to do is make some type of

informational poster. Last year they made a poster on what you can and can't

use on the pigs coat or feed it.. very easy for Mav to participate in. I

can't remember what they did this year, but it was something that we couldn't

explain to Maverick so instead, we made a poster of a pig with all the parts

that

they have to identify as a part of their project, then we made a puzzle out

of cork board and labeled the parts and Maverick had to write the name of each

part (from a model) and glue it in place. I came up with the idea, but the

club was totally OK with him doing that.... And understanding of him doing it

differently. THAT is what I am looking for. Maverick also has to write buyer

letters, but I have him write one letter (from a model) and make 20 copies and

then he signs them where as my other kids have to write 20 letters all on

thier own.....LOL. Maverick is still participating in what he needs to.

As for the cliquey part, is oblivious, and I steer clear except for on

the days when my kids are showing and it all works out.

The 4H clubs are for kids from 5 to 18. They aren't able to actually show

an animal until they are 9. The kids learn the responsibility of taking care

of the animals, giving shots, worming, grooming, etc. It's really good for

them. The younger ones have a club like Klover Kids or Discovery Kids that

they are able to participate in. They can buddy with the other kids with

animals...visit the animal projects, etc. They also can do stuff with arts and

crafts that they have displayed in one of the halls at the Fair.

The Community Club meets once a month. That is for all members. Then each

project..Like Swine, Poultry, Cake Decorating, whatever, meets seperately,

usually once a month until it's time for the Fair and then they meet more often.

The whole club also has to do a certain number of " community service " projects

each year.

Even for people who don't live where you can have farm animals there are lots

of other areas..... rocketry, gardening, rabbits (cavey), shooting, cake

decorating, sewing, etc.

That's what I know. We have done this for 10 years now in many different

areas....and the kids all enjoy it.

Hi,

I ran a 4H group in my town for a few years. I did this because the 4H groups

available were not things my son could do. The first year we did cooking.

Another year we did rocks and cultural masks and astronomy. Another mother took

over the group and did cooking again but in the church kitchen. The small towns

here let the groups do basically whatever they wanted and meet how often they

wanted. We met every 2 weeks. Some groups are weekly. I know another mom in

town did gourmet chocolate desserts. YUM YUM.
