Hey Kim - I'd call customer service anyway just to review what has been happening and confirm that your machine is working correctly. They are a wealth of information about everything Vitamix related (even recipe questions!)

I don't think that not covering the blades enough would cause that. Running the machine on the lower, variable speeds for any length of time or with any heavy load can over heat the motor though. It's like driving a car in first gear down the highway.

vitamix blades spinning counterclockwise?

Just curious.....a couple of weeks ago my vitamix had a difficult time making pesto and smoked a little from the inside....possibly I used too little oil or too little ingredients so that I didn't cover the blades enough.I'm just paranoid that the machine isn't working quite right as it shut off on its own while making a date/almond pie crust. It came back on soon after and I supposed the blades got "stuck" at the bottom with the gooey mixture. My question is does the mushroom cap and blades spin counterclockwise....that's what direction mine is spinning and I just wanted to make sure that is what it is supposed to do. Otherwise I will need to call customer service. Thanks in advance for an answer!Kim in TN
