Guest guest
If memory serves, lotions are oil-in-water suspensions so I'm guessing that they'd have to be treated something like mayo, i.e., gradually incorporating the oil into whatever else you're using. Have you thought of looking for instructions and proportions online and then trying to adapt them? A template would be really handy, especially the first time (no sense in wasting money if you don't need to). I'll bet makes her own skin care products... body cream in the Vitamix I bought the basic ingredients for body lotion (grapeseed oil, liquid lecithtin, and something else I can't remember at the moment)at the health food store yesterday and thought I'd see if anyone has ideas of how to make it in the vitamix. Sounds reasonable and easy - but has anyone tried it? I did check our group files for recipes but did not see any. If anyone has a link I would love to see how someone else does it first. I probably need some essential oils for a wonderful smell, I did not purchase those b/c I didn't know which combinations to try first. I was wondering if you could make the basic cream and divide it into small jars, then add essential oils to make different "flavors". Or does the oil need to be blended up with the batch? I figure its sorta like make the smoothies - best to start out with a recipe then branch off from that. My first attempt with vegetable smoothies in the vitamix went down the drain. But after I started using this group's recipes and got the hang of it, things really began tasting G*R*E*A*T!!
Guest guest
The biggest problem you will encounter will be the amount of the ingredients needed to make a proper lotion in the Vitamix-you need enough to cover the blades, but the ingredients are likely to separate after blending, and possibly go rancid before you can use that amount. I would think you would need to store it in the fridge, and I am not sure how comforting it would be to put on cold lotion this time of year! You would want to incorporate your essential oil at the time of blending. Lecithin is soy based, and very likely from genetically modified soy, if that is of any concern to you (big issue for me personally) I make homemade butter in the VM and us it as a body lotion-works a charm on both skin and hair. > > I bought the basic ingredients for body lotion (grapeseed oil, liquid lecithtin, and something else I can't remember at the moment)at the health food store yesterday and thought I'd see if anyone has ideas of how to make it in the vitamix. > > Sounds reasonable and easy - but has anyone tried it? Guest guest
I actually DID try all sorts of concoctions for creams, lotions, potions etc. but found separation to be a problem, and that I was STILL putting altered crap on my skin, so I quit trying when I discovered two things: First, that butter worked better than any lotion I have ever used. Second, when I quit eating things I had sensitivities or allergies to, my hair and skin became radiant and I no longer NEEDED any lotions, lol. I do make a homemade body powder in the VM by blending up tapioca pearls with a drop of lavender oil and storing it in a tightly sealed jar. Makes a wonderful after bath dusting powder, without all the toxic garbage in commercial stuff :)From: <kareningotham@...>Subject: Re: body cream in the Vitamix Date: Tuesday, November 2, 2010, 10:55 AM If memory serves, lotions are oil-in-water suspensions so I'm guessing that they'd have to be treated something like mayo, i.e., gradually incorporating the oil into whatever else you're using. Guest guest
Will you be using the dry container for the bath powder, Bren? body cream in the Vitamix I bought the basic ingredients for body lotion (grapeseed oil, liquid lecithtin, and something else I can't remember at the moment)at the health food store yesterday and thought I'd see if anyone has ideas of how to make it in the vitamix. I have a jar full of powder I had made in the old VM. Come to think of it, I may just use the OLD VM for all things non food related! Hmmmmmm a Vitamix sitting on a bathroom counter may just be the new hot Hollywood decor item! Not sure I want to " taint " my shiny new red one! Guest guest
Ohhh! Powder in the vitamix, I love that idea! I will try that, too. Since I have the ingredients already purchased I will mix a very basic batch of cream (1/2 cup distilled water, 1/2 cup grape seed oil, 1 TBS liquid lecithin, 400 IU vitamin E oil, 6-12 drops of essential oils) just to say I did it. I remember reading online about a cream that specifically said it did not need to be refrigerated. I need to find that site again - that would be unbearable in the winter - to put on cold lotion - eeek! Obviously the ideal would be that we not need creams at all and hopefully with my vastly improved vitamix diet these days it will make a difference. I'm looking forward to making butter, too. I will have to make it from store-bought cream, though. REAL Body Butter - how fun! Guest guest
You can make hair appear thicker by using a tapioca, chia, or flax seed gel-just buzz up tapioca pearls or flax seeds in the Vitamix, add about two tablespoons to about 1/2 cup of warm water, cover and let "gel" for about 10 minutes. Store in a mason jar in the fridge, and use as you would regular hair gel. Chia leaves a bit of a residue, but washes out very well. Flax and tapioca leave no residue-all work great! No chemicals!
