Watermelon rind

Good afternoon,

I was at the Ohio State Fair the other day and the demonstrator put the rind of

the watermelon in his juice he was making. My question -- does the rind have

any nutritional value or was it being added just to show that the Vitamix could

handle it? I've bought some watermelon and want to freeze some and didn't know

whether to freeze with or without the rind.

The rind is CHOCK FULL of minerals and is especially refreshing on hot

days. Be aware, though, that it renders your product (juice, smoothie,

et. al) more perishable; it doesn't keep well. Drink it right away and

enjoy--it's much more interesting and delicious than plain watermelon!

Make sure to thoroughly wash your watermelon before cutting into it,

though.

Hi ,

I was just talking to my mom and she said that they used to can the rind, minus

the skin, when they were kids. They canned everything they could get their

hands on--my grandfather was a poorly paid Lutheran minister trying to bring up

5 kids during the Depression.

So, when you say rind, here, are you including the skin?

Hello Janet - yes it can. Watermelon Rind is a bit bitter, so use to taste. It is also an EXCELLENT diuretic.

we've made watermelon rind pickles for years. Yeah, they aren't heathy due to the sugar but the bitterness of the rind and the sweetness of the sugar, then the vinegar they pickle so well.
