Guest guest
Dear Donna, You have to attend at least 1 meeting to start weight-watchers, and you do have to go weight in, and its a pay as you go kind of thing. However, the meetings are NOT onerous or heavy, nor do you have to participate a lot. They DO provide support that I have found very helpful. I am one who hates being asked to explain myself or my feelings in public, so I can understand anticipating the meetings being awful, but I'd say your friend would do well to get off it about that and try the meetings for 16 weeks and see what happens. No one will try to drag any secrets out of him or analyze him. The meetings are only 1/2 hour - I do mine 8am Saturday morning, and then go have a hearty breakfast and burn some flex points! I started in January, and I've lost 82 pounds so far, ~150 to go! Yes, I am a big fellow. I think Weight Watchers is a really solid program, and worth the expense. Even more, your friend is worth the expense and the time the meetings take. - Weight Watchers Question > > Hi Everyone! > > DH has expressed an interest in trying to get in shape and lose > some weight > -- (YAY!) Guest guest
Thanks, ! I'll pass the info on! CONGRATS on all your work & success so far. My DH is a pretty big guy, too. I also hope to be able to motivate him somewhat to workout. But at least he is considering these things! Guest guest
Dear Donna, On the workout front, I actually started working out first, then a year later started Weight Watchers. I think at the very beginning (estimated, didn't have a scale big enough at the time) I weighed 450. I started Body For Life by Bill , bought his book, and a $99 dumbbell bench, and a small set of dumbbells - 1lb - 20 lb. I started with the 1 lbs. (I know it seems wimpy, but at the time I could barely move any more) and worked my way up from there. When I need new sizes of dumbbell, I bought them, now up to 60lbs after 2 years. And now I need a personal trainer to help me off a plateau I've been on. Bill has an eating plan which was fine except for one piece of advice you should never ever give to a guy my size: Bill said that one day a week, eat whatever you want. Well, I can eat a whole week's worth of food in one day, so that doesn't work for me. The entire 1st year I'd lose weight during the week, and then gain it back on that one day. Sad, but true. Weight watchers helped me have a practical limit, but I can do essentially what I think Bill had in mind by saving all my weight watcher flexpoints for Saturday. But its not " eat all you want, no rules " . And I'm happier for it. I absolutely do not feel deprived in any way. I feel enriched, and I enjoy the food I eat much more. The first 12 weeks of the Body for Life program was pure hell for me, but there is a section of Bills book that speaks the truth about the personal commitment you have to make, and I guess I was finally ready to hear it. The 2nd 12 weeks was better, but still very hard. But by the 3rd round of 12 weeks, I was amazed at how much better I could move, how much more energy I had. And my lung capacity dramatically improved. The dance aerobics I was doing no longer sufficed, and I started kickboxing (at our very own 's suggestion!). I thought I was going to die the first few times, but I impressed the hell out of my daughter who was predicting a disaster the first time I went kickboxing, but wound up being wow'ed at her old man's tenacity and the fact that I was still standing at the end of the class which she said kicked her butt too. The real thing you should let your DH know is that if DH make the required commitment to just do it 3 days a week for 20 min(aerobics) and 3 days for 45 min (resistance), there is a miracle built into the body just waiting to happen. But you have to work for it. My body has taught me this about miracles in general - you most often have to work hard to get them to happen. Good Luck! I'll be praying for DH to get inspired to go for the miracle. Re: Weight Watchers Question Thanks, ! I'll pass the info on! CONGRATS on all your work & success so far. My DH is a pretty big guy, too.
