I’ve been getting spam virus attacks

for about the last week. They were

all stopped at my internet service provider’s web site, so they don’t

even get to my virus protection program on my machine. In my case, it’s been the “Netsky”

virus. I’ve been getting

about 8 or 10 attacks every day.

That virus works by finding a machine that doesn’t have up-to-date

protection, then sending itself to everyone listed in that machine’s

address book. It goes on and on.

If anyone on the list doesn’t have

up-to-date virus definitions in a good anti-virus program, I suggest that you

update the virus definitions daily (at the anti-virus program’s website).

Ken, what is the name of the virus that

tried to attack your machine?

Norm

Norm,

I didn't get the virus. Hotmail caught it, but it was associated with a "Zaplist" message. Don't kwow the name of it. I've also been getting a lot of "Netsky" infected massages as well. The easiest thing anyone can do to protect themselves is to avoid openning any attachment that you're not expecting, even if it seems to be coming from a friend.

The most obvious bad actors can be files with extensions like .pif .exe .com .bat. They are often malicious programs. Word processor documents and spreadsheets can also contain destructive macros. So the best rule is always -- if you don't know that you were expecting a file, don't open it.

Remember those kids cartoons where the victim gets a package and says, "ooh, package for me? I wasn't expecting a package!" Then it blows up in his face? That is the story with unsolicited file attachments.

Best to all - - Ken
