Guest guest
, That is awesome! I am so happy for jacob and so proud of you for getting him into a regular classroom! Where do you live again, to be soooo revolutionary? I also admire the way you spoke to the teacher and reasurred her. Maybe give her a copy of Teaching Reading to Children with Down Syndrome and any fact sheets from the computer you can. I feel that when the teachers are not comfortable, i try to give them something to read so they can become familiar. Hey- great news- go and celebrate! ~ Mom to 12 DS and Diabetes Type 1 and 8 NY
Guest guest
We had 's ARD today. It went very well. He will be in a 1st grade class, with pull-outs for Edmark Reading for 30 minutes and Counter Math for 30 minutes. The rest of the time in the reg ed classroom. He will still have a one on one aid. The only difference will be that she will get training on how to modify work, chart the IEP goals and on how to implement the behavior plan they are going to work up. She will also be under the direct supervision of the spe ed teacher and will have to answer to her on s progress. This is a good thing because the last couple of years the spe ed teacher didn't get as involved as I would have liked, and she runs a tight ship with her aides. So I hope this will be a good thing for . He will continue to get 3/30 minute speech sessions and one 30 minute session with the OT each week. is the very first child to be included in this school, and we have a new teacher lined up for 1st grade. Today's meeting was the first time I had a chance to meet her. She sat quietly through the whole drawn out process of the meeting, when it came to my turn and I finished talking about what I had written down, I said that I just wanted to make sure that she thought of has one of her students, that he be included in everything the class is doing, and not think of him any differently than any of her other students. I also told her that she looked scared to death! And she laughed, and said her biggest worry was his behavior, she hadn't had really had any contact with him. So they have it set up for her and the spec ed teacher to observe in his class as well as the spec ed teacher observing the 1st class to get ideas on modifications and her routine. When I pointed out how much help the aide would be to her and the class, as well as how much support she would have from me and the administration she seemed to relax. I have to give so much credit to this school for being willing to support 's education in an inclusive environment, especially considering they have NEVER done it before came along. I feel like a very lucky mom tonight : ) , mom to 7yrs ds and soon to be 1st grader
