Guest guest
--- It was a totally special ed bus- they were all disabled- autistic, etc. That's probably why the coward thought he could get away with it. If the parents wouldn't have gotten suspicious and put the tape recorder in his backpack he would have gotten away with it. Guest guest
From what I heard on the news last night he is the first one on the bus (to begin with) and the other children on the bus are non-verbal, one was autistic, one was deaf and mute also. The parents said there was no child on the bus that would have been able to report the abuse. That's why I am scared to death when our babies go to pre-school programs at 3. Most of them couldn't tell you what, if anything, was going on. It's a real scare for any parents but especially parents of children with special needs. Guest guest
You know, I am so thankful that Austin rides the " regular " bus. He rides with his brother, and every child on there would speak up for him. But I don't really have any concerns. Yesterday, Austin tried to persuade his bus driver to go to Applebees. I mean really tried. Threw in the pretty please, everything. Now, Applebee's is at least 1/2 hour from here, depending on which town you drive to. His aide said it was the most hysterical scene ever. He even threw that lip out there. Dennis (bus driver) said it almost worked! He tries it with everyone. The day his aide took him home with her, he tried to get her to go there for dinner. If they had the time, they would have, lol. His bus driver even made a book for him to read on the bus to keep him in his seat. Yes, it's a small town, and the bus driver has lived here since he was born, and everyone knows everyone else. Thank goodness, lol. Guest guest
Well... possibly because they didn't have the verbal skills or the mental facilities to do so... OR.... they too, could have been threatened by the driver. Any number of possibilities could explain why the other kids didn't say anything. Guest guest
Ralph, my dh is a school bus driver. He is currently driving kids to and from a special needs pre school. There is always a matron on the bus. In fact, I think there always has to be 2 adults at all times. Ralph has said many times, he absoultely cannot touch any of the kids-even to help them in or out of a car seat. That is the matron's responsibility. His responsibility is to drive and make sure the kiddies get to where they have to go safely! BTW, there are no special qualification for the driver to be on a special needs bus or regular. The background checks are all the same. Guest guest
In our district, there has to be two adults on the bus, a driver, and an aide. Unless they are in it together, this is a very good system of policing the behavior. It should be mandatory to have a recording device on every school bus. Guest guest
We are moving into our new home in about a week, and although we are staying in the same school district we now will live in a busing area as opposed to a walker area. could have been receiving transportation all along because of his special needs, but because he has a brother a grade behind him, I felt it would be silly to send him on a bus while his brother has to walk or get driven by me. I treated no different. Now he will get transportation and the school encourages that he ride on the " special " bus, but I have opted out....I told them that would be ludicrous. He will ride on the bus with his brother and other peers. I have more fears of him riding on the " special " bus, especially in light of what just occurred, than on the regular ed bus. I know most of the children who will be on the bus and as I told the school, " he will be in good hands! " It still amazes me when the school still encourages segregation. Will they ever get it? I will NOT have Maverick riding on the sp ed bus, but the behaviors on the reg ed bus are SO OUT OF CONTROL! They have an aide becuase it is so bad, but she is rude and swears and argues with the kids all the time. I am going to try to get them to OK an aide on the bus for Mav. We'll see. At this point, he gets one assigned to all extra cir. activities that he is in ......like for his band concert and if he is in sports, he'll have an aide for that after school. I am thinking,....this might work with the bus issues also. But then again,......we'll see.
Guest guest
In our school district, they have installed video cameras on every bus, regular ed and special ed. It's a shame it has to be done, but it has become the way of the world, I suppose. Jackie, Mom to 15ds, 12, and Bradley
Guest guest
Actually, our district did install them after a bus driver was assaulted by two high school students. So, it just goes to show, it can happen the other way around. Everyone can benefit from the cameras, especially our children. Jackie

You can set your watch by the driver. When Liam sees the bus come pull up he runs to the curb. The driver opens the door and shouts, " Hey Lamb chop! Come on! " If there was anything funny going on, he wouldn't be so happy to see them. Guest guest
Ralph is working for the same company that amanda used in pre school, by coincindence. She was the mayor of the bus and the drivers and matrons loved her. One of the matrons still remembers her from like 8-9 years ago! I was so worried about the bus, she too was so happy to leave me! Guest guest
They have video cameras on our school busses. I had several people at work ask me if I saw the incident regarding the child with DS and the bus driver. They were all furious. One of the receptionists at work told me that her son complained about one kid on the bus hitting all the other kids (this is a regular bus). She saw her grandson get on and the boy hit him and others. She followed the bus and watched as the kids got off - the boy continued to hit everyone who walked past him. She confronted the bus driver - who said that the boys parents refused to medicate him and there was nothing that could be done. She marched into the school and reported the incident and said it has to stop ASAP. Well, I'm not sure what happened - but that boy didn't hit anyone again. I know of a county where a bus driver was reported by his peers on numerous occasions that they would see him pulled off the road with a child on his lap. Those reports were ignored. Finally, a teenage boy snapped and reported the years of abuse that was going on. Things got dirty as far as personnel issues - but the man is now in prison. While waiting to be sentenced, he was out on bail and went to volunteer in the children's ward at the hospital and a private school - his wife was the one who reported what he was doing and he was quickly refused entry to those places. Like all professions, a few can give them all a bad name. My mother drove school bus for over 25 years. She purchased many coats for children who could not afford them, delivered supplies to families, etc. She was a social worker disguised as a bus driver The kid she kicked off the bus numerous times and battled with his mother was one of her favorites - and the kid knew it, too!
