Yes you can add flax seeds whole - they will get all ground up. The great thing about this is that your flax seeds don't oxidize (they begin to oxidize as soon as they are ground). There are sometimes sticky bits of flax on my container sides after putting flax seeds in my smoothie, but I just keep a bottle brush handy to my sink and use it to clean the inside of my container.

I LOVE to hear of a convert - it is one thing for a health conscious person to try green smoothies, but to have a person who "vowed never to drink anything "GREEN" become a convert is awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Basic question about flax seed

Just wondering if I need to grind the flax seed first before I add it to my smoothie, or will the machine grind it up right along with the veggies and fruit? I've had my machine for just a few weeks, and I'm enjoying it immensely!By the way, this list is great. I'm soaking up information like a dried out sponge! Also, although I haven't seen much posted about Swiss chard, I tried it in my smoothie yesterday and it was good. I bought a bunch of it at the local farmer's market. Does anyone else use chard? It's very mild and didn't overpower any of the other flavors. My husband, who vowed never to drink anything "GREEN!", is now a total convert. Before the evening is over, he asks me what we are having in our smoothie the next morning. :)

I use chard when I juice and you're right--it's nice and unobtrusive

(not to mention good for you).

It's so nice that you're enjoying your machine; there's NOTHING like

the Vita-Mix!

Thanks, Lea Ann! Excellent suggestion about the bottle brush. I've noted the

same thing when I put flax on cereal. It does tend to cling.

Thanks, too, for the input on chard. I really like it, and this is the

first time I've eaten it raw, with all the enzymes in tact.

Great invention, this Vitamix.

I fairly small company doesn't stay in business this long unless

they're doing something right. Vita-Mix ROCKS.

I'm just about within walking distance of the headquarters in Olmsted Township,

Ohio. It's a beautiful building, and right after I got my machine, they had a

big open house with great demonstrations, etc. I enjoyed talking to the folks

there, who were very friendly and helpful.

You're right, this company does rock.

I envy you! I'd really love to visit their headquarters.

I recently started to add flax seed to my smoothies. To help get them ground up well without heating up my frozen fruit too much, I have been making them in 2 stages. I throw my liquid (usually water) and everything that is not frozen in first and let that mix up well. Then I add my frozen fruit and mix again. It could be my imagination but it seems that Vita-mix works less hard this way.
