LOL Rene you've got me rolling on the floor laughing my glutes off! I DID THE SAME THING in the first week that I was drinking Green Smoothies.

Mustard Greens are NOT good for Green Smoothies. In fact, I like almost every food I've ever tried, but I just don't like Mustard Greens and that's not likely to change!

Newbie for Green Smoothies

Greeting all,How are you are doing today? I just got my Vitamix on Friday and I am like a mad scientist in the lab. I'm making 2 different flavored ice creams, apple pancakes, frittatas, and atleast 3 different soups and I am on a roll. So today I take myself over to whole foods to see what's in the wind. I pick up some mustard greens because they're ranking pretty high on the Andi (nutrient density) scale and I am like a mad woman trying to revitalize and re energize every cell in my body. Lol.Now I've never had mustard greens before but I'm starting to develop a little confidence over here. Why oh why did I stray away from making my first official green smoothie without a recipe? Yuck they really did taste like mustard! At first I thought that taste was too much fresh ginger. I made another batch..oh no they my smoothie tasted like mustard! Now my personal disclaimer is that it has in no way deterred my from my pleasure potions that I sip on during the day but now I'll think twice before entering into unknown territory without a recipe. Funny thing is, I tasted a small part of a leave before I even started and it didn't taste bitter or strong at all. Well now that you're done cracking up, I turn you back over to regular scheduled programming.Sincerely, from CT

I feel your pain (hehe). Yesterday I made a green smoothie and used kale for the first time. After my first big draw on the straw, I kept trying to figure out what I had previously made using pepper in my Vita-mix that maybe hadn't all rinsed out! Seriously, it wasn't all that terrible except it had an aftertaste of Tabasco without the vinegar - I could not finish drinking it. Lesson learned - stick to the milder greens for me in smoothies! Now I need to find a recipe to use the rest of the kale I purchased.

Enjoy your Vita-mix. I love, love, love mine!!!

"it wasn't all that terrible except it had an aftertaste of Tabasco without the vinegar"

LOL !

May I ask how much Kale you put into the Green Smoothie? (Kale is such a good green, it would be nice if you could acquire a taste for it). In Vicotria Boutenko's book she claims that over time you will start to crave the bitter taste of greens. With Parsley I said, "NO WAY" but after 9 months of drinking Green Smoothies I was able to not only use Parsley, but reach the point where I could use an entire "bunch" of parsley in a Green Smoothie!

If you used a cup or two of Kale, do you think that perhaps just a leaf or half of a leaf of Kale might be "hideable" when mixed with something like spinach?

Kale Chips are always a great way to eat Kale as well: http://www.google.com/search?hl= & q=kale+chips & sourceid=navclient-ff & rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS177US229 & ie=UTF-8

There are lots of recipes here (check out the right hand column down towards the bottom): http://www.365daysofkale.com/ I love the idea of a whole website dedicated to kale! :-)

Lea Ann - I used one leaf, without the stalk. I've experimented with milder greens and was very happy with the end result and bought the kale because I thought I read somewhere it was a mild green. Boy, was I mistaken - BUT I'm not one to give up, so kale may be introduced into a green smoothie again, but not this week! I'll take baby steps to develop a taste first.

Thanks for all you do on this site!

This is just my take, but I find with the stronger greens that I like to use a lemon with them. It doesn't hide the green taste, but it does add a wonderful taste to the green drink and I really like the results. However, I must add that I can drink a green drink made entirely from kale and it isn't a problem for me. It is really true that if you stay with the greens, you begin to crave them. I look forward to my green smoothie in the morning every day!

Well, everyone has different taste buds that's for sure - one kale leaf without the stem would be a piece of cake for me - I consider kale to be a relatively mild green myself. You are wise to give it some time and to take baby steps - and if it never tastes good in a smoothie, then try for kale chips or some other way to eat kale or never eat kale again - food's gotta be fun, and tasty, not a chore and icky!

Oh, and a thought that just popped into my mind - if this is the first time you've tried kale "maybe" it was just an exceptionally bitter kale plant! I have to say that in my experience Romaine lettuce can range from very mild to Extrememly bitter - I can't ever tell from looking at the head of Romaine which it's going to be! Fingers crossed that might be the case.

And you are welcome - health and healthy eating is my passion and I am so happy to be able to share what I know in the hopes that it is helpful to someone!

I tried romaine lettuce one time in a smoothie and I thought it was awful. I hadn't thought about it being the particular head I had so I guess i will try it again.

My favorite smoothie is an apple, a carrot, a handful of walnuts, some flax seed, spinach or kale, and coconut water or pineapple juice.  Sometimes I add a slice of lemon with rind.and sometimes I add a couple of dates for extra sweetness.  I take the surplus to work and share with the guys.  They call it Hulk juice. On Thu, May 6, 2010 at 5:13 PM, Lea Ann Savage <lsavage@...> wrote:

Speaking of regular scheduled programming, this thread puts me in mind

of a Cheers episode; Woody gets a gig doing a commercial for a

vegetable juice that he discovers is disgusting. Stricken with guilt,

he agrees to be hypnotized into liking " Veggie Boy. " It gets REALLY

funny (not to mention relevant) at about 4:20:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIctNEaBLpw & feature=youtube_gdata .

Enjoy!
