Guest guest
I have a membership at Sam's Club and usually only buy certain things there. You can really get carried away with impulse buying if you are not careful! I have wondered about Costco, as there is one maybe 10 minutes further away than Sam's. So, now that you have tried it, would you say it is better? Anyone else have opinions on that? I already saw Lea Ann's post, and I assume she bases her opinion on doing Vitamix demonstrations at those stores. And while we're at it, anyone want to chime in on BJ's? There is one of those about the same distance away as Sam's. Fran In a message dated 5/9/2010 5:34:53 P.M. Guest guest
It is hard to describe the difference, but there is one and I much prefer Costco (as a store). As a place to work, they have more rules and regulations to follow and Sam's Clubs are easier - but then that is probably has something to do with why Costco is a better store! For years and years I've heard about Costco and how much better it is than Sam's.We have lived here a little over a year and each time we've driven by a Costco I've said soon.We got red bell peppers for about a buck a piece! The Madjool dates I've hears Lea Ann talk about are huge! I got 2 big packs of them. There is a smoked raspberry chipolata sauce that I've not found anywhere else. At a potluck someone had mixed it with cream cheese to make this super yummy dip.We did pretty good not going crazy buying stuff. We did spend $177 dollars not including membership but most of that was for staples. I love Costco!!Kim in OR
Guest guest
Fran,I like Costco better but I really can't explain why. I got the executive membership so we get to go in an hour earlier and get 2% back on our purchases every year.Kim in ORFrom: fradal@... <fradal@...>Subject: Re: Finally went to Costco!! Guest guest
Lea Ann,Agreed! If all I buy there is the dates, paper products and that raspberry sauce it would be worth the membership. Those dates look so good!Oh and hey this is day #3 of green smoothies with no nausea!! Bill bought me a really big ice cream cake for mothers day. He ordered it before I decided to go mostly raw. He is such a sweetyKim in ORFrom: Lea Ann Savage <lsavage@...>Subject: Re: Finally went to Costco!! Guest guest
I live in upstate NY where we have BJ's and Sam's. I shop at BJ's because of it's proximity to where I live. Used to have a membership at Sam's also, but that is further away and it was rather redundant. My son lives in N. Virginia, Potomac Falls/Sterling area. They have a large Costco there that we go to when I visit. The VA Costco is like shopping nirvana. There is food offered from all over the world. Don't know if all Costcos are like that one, or if it is because of the tremendous divergence of cultures in the DC area but, omg, the choices! (Guess I can understand now why people who visit here always plan a trip to our big Wegmans! LOL) Sure wish we would get a Costco here like the one in N.Va Carol K I have a membership at Sam's Club and usually only buy certain things there. .....I have wondered about Costco, as there is one maybe 10 minutes further away than Sam's. Guest guest
For me it seems like Sam's has the same stuff every time you go in - of course except for the seasonal stuff. I see no variety in the things they offer. They carry a lot of junk food. I've let my membership lapse. Costco have different stuff often. You have to watch for item shelf tags that have an asterisk because once it's gone, it's gone. They had a certain Nature's Path granola that I loved and the price was right, but then it was asterisked. They did replace it with a different type of cereal but that was my favorite. They carry more organic items. Now for me both stores are located within about 5 miles with Sam's being like 1/2 mile east of Costco. Guest guest
IMO Costco is like Target and Sam's is like WalMart - a subtle, but discernable difference. Costco is a bit more upscale. I only did one show in a BJs and they had more produce available and less sold in "bulk". I didn't have time to "shop" in that store to try to form an opinion of it :-( BJs had zucinni and yellow squash and cabbage for sale - Costco and Sam's Club never sell those items. From a demonstrator's standpoint I LOVED that aspect of BJs because I didn't have to shop at a second store (as I do each night when I am demonstrating at a Sam's or Costco) to get those items. From a sales standpoint I didn't like it so much because as a new contract, sales are low - they build over time. Guest guest
I really don't like the quality of Sam's produce, and the fact that they import so much from other countries disturbs me even more. Is Costco's produce American-grown and better quality?Deborah Sent via BlackBerry from T-MobileFrom: "Lea Ann Savage" <lsavage@...>Date: Sun, 9 May 2010 20:47:34 -0400< >Subject: Re: Finally went to Costco!! Guest guest
I've had memberships at Sams, Bj's and Costco. I don't care for Sams. Felt like stuff was cheap. Then again the are part of the evil empire. (Wal-Mart) Some things are nicer at BJ's but the selection is always the same in mens clothing for example. I do like that they have a meatball mix in the ground beef section and some of the packages aren't quite as large which is nice for a single person. Also we recently got self serve registers which I love so I don't have to deal with idiot cashiers. Costco has an eyeglass dept which is supposedly better than a lot of places. I feel the quality is better there but it is always crowded. The people in the parking lots can't drive. Also if you see something you like at Costco get it now since they may not have it next time. Now I must go to the customer service desk to request that they carry zucinni, yellow squash and cabbage. Tony
Guest guest
I asked a friend to take me to Wal-Mart the last time I was in New Jersey because they seem to be the only place even remotely near NYC that carries Welch's White Grape Juice in a flavor--as Lea Ann will bear me out--raspberry (I think they had cranberry, too, and the plain). The price was very reasonable and I picked up a few to use as for sweetening smoothies. I REALLY wish they also carried the peach and pear flavors but they don't. Re: Finally went to Costco!! Guest guest
I agree about the produce. At BJ's it turned me off when I saw how much was coming from China. Now I look it over carefully if I buy it. But here we are blessed with Wegmans who surpass everyone else in the area in quality produce. The only way I can do better is at the Public Farm markets and roadside stands during growing season, or my own backyard. Carol
Guest guest
Hi, I’m originally from Syracuse, NY and have been in Arizona for two years. I definitely miss Wegmans!! But, finding Costco out here is a good thing, and I go there quite a bit—especially for their LARGE bags of frozen fruit (some are organic, too)! I agree that shopping at Sam’s Club just doesn’t cut it after being in Costco. Also, I got my machine at Costco and still love to stop at the demos when they are there. Always something to learn.
