,

I had no idea it was so bad in NYC. I can't imagine being responsible for

the whereabouts of someone else's children. Whew! What an awesome task. God

bless you & all school teachers out there.

Re: unexcused abscence hearing-gonna scream

Do you know what its like living in NYC? How many kids could be missing,

abused, neglected? I had a kid, broke my heart, but he was absent every

Monday with lame excuses from home.

I met with the family (well the dad) and he said he didnt like art. This

went on. I was a little suspicious. In June, him and his sister stopped

showing up for school. I was concerned. There was no contact with the home.

Everyone was trying to contact. Finally, it was the last day of school and

the last day for our guidance counselor before she retired, but I insisted

that she do a home visit.

Mom was being abused by dad (hey any wonder I never met with her) and she had

to leave with the kids for a shelter. Soooooo, here in the big apple, we

have to keep very close track of where the kids are at all times. If we

havent heard from the family by the 3rd day of an absence, they get a phone

call, a letter and must have the proper written excuses when they return.

Hey, its not just teaching.... and we are held accountable for the child's

whereabouts.

I do keep my kids home sometimes for trivial reasons, but not when theyve

missed alot of school, etc. Important things, like suarees in WV! LOL

We have two little girls where we work who are out all the time. They are from

Romania and I guess are adopted. They have never smiled in my presence or any

other teacher's presence in the 7 months that I have known them. Their 18 month

old sister can't walk. When we put them in the car at parent pick-up, the smoke

is so thick that I nearly choke and the baby and the girls must get in that.

Also, I have one of my babies (6 years old) who went home with scabies. He

has had it for days and the school social worker had to go out to the place they

live and get them to take him to the doctor. If they aren't neglecting him,

they are beating him. They have been known to lock him in a dog kennel when

he's " bad. " I can do nothing about it without losing my job and we really need

the money right now. I would take him if they removed him from the home. They

both work in a vet's office and the vet is allowing them to live there because

they are homeless with 4 kids.

I think it's ridiculous that they hassle caring, loving parents the way

they have you. ( I forgot who originally posted) Sorry but my support for you is

here and genuine.
