Not-so-good news

Wednesday's bone marrow biopsy was " packed with blasts. " That means

recurrent leukemia. Jan has been really good about it. She will be

going into the hospital for chemo starting on Monday. Just what happens

hasn't been revealed yet, but the news just isn't good.

Still, the past year of remission has been a good one. Jan has gone

back into her independent living setting and the apartment was vacuumed,

the bed made, and the kitchen clean when I picked her up a week ago.

The signs of leukemia just weren't there. She's dragged all the sticks

and brush from our harsh winter to the pile where I chipped them and

raked so many leaves that the huge compost bin has gone from half-full

to overflowing. Today, she was outside shooting baskets, something

she's pretty good at.

As usual I'm far away. It was Jan who told me what was going on. She's

open about it even if she's scared (and so are her parents). She's been

part of the decision making. She agreed to the bone marrow test, even

though it is extremely hard. Her response to the recommendation for

chemo was, " I can do that. " They love her on the cancer floor, which

she visited on Wednesday after the bone marrow test.

I was going to ask that, but I didn't know if that would be okay or not. If

it's okay, I'd like to send a card as well.
