Guest guest
My son's second grade teacher uses something similar. The children are rewarded with raffle type tickets for good behavior. At the end of the day, all the tickets are put in a container and the winning ticket gets to pick a prize. She gives positive feedback to the children as the tickets are " won " during the day. Math skills are also incorporated as they sometimes count, graph and compare tickets. Donna

Ultimately your reward is based on chance... not on your actual behavior. My kids found this approach very discouraging. - Becky
Guest guest
Kathy, I just read this thread...I have to agree with Kathy, Liam's mom....withhold her paycheck, since she is one of those who teach for the check, not the child. Give Sara a great big hug from us!! She shouldn't have been treated this way. Sue mom to Kate 13 and Karrie 6 w/ds
Guest guest
Well, to contribute late to the thread, it seems to me that the particular reward system that was used for Sara's class is almost doomed to fail if the " services " (opportunity to participate) is a separate item in the reward chain. Have a problem behavior on the day " services " are earned--whatever day that is; automatically end up with just a bag of stuff and none of the fun of participation in the activity. Having the crucial " service " reward on the final day (the day the kids are wired up anyway with the party in sight) wasn't a great idea either. Having the service linked to the tangible (manicure with nail file; hair setting with rollers) would be a better way, with any unearned days' service and tangible not going to the child who didn't earn THAT day instead of losing all services because of a single bad day. If it weren't for the other instances of not implementing the BIP, the comments about punishment, making Sara watch, and the attitude about the little boy, I'd think this was a bad call by the teacher and could be moved on from. In light of those things, I'm not so sure. I think a course of PBS and some awareness training would be a good idea, with a simulation including that great teacher appreciation meal (earn the food one day, the plate and cup the next; silverware and napkin the next; participation the next, etc--and you could put the hot coffee in that bag with the ice cream, right?). But it's almost April and the district probably won't provide any such training until summer or next fall. Can Sara wait that long?
