www.leeworks.net/suaree/suaree2001.html

Auction - For the past three years, we have had an auction to help raise

funds for the Suaree''. The auction has turned out to be one of the big

hits of the Suaree'' especially, with the kids, who have a wonderful time

bidding on things of interest to them. Items for the auction are brought

from home by the attendees. Items should be in good condition.

T-shirts - We will again have for sale t-shirts and canvass carryall bags.

The price of each item will be a few dollars above cost. This will cover

the cost of having the design made and any related costs. Any surplus will

be used for the Suaree'¹.

Food - The picnic on Saturday will most likelybe catered by the Fountain

Ruritan. At this time a per person cost in unavailable.

Transportation:

Amtrak station - Cumberland MD

Greyhound station - Cumberland, MD

Airports - Cumberland Regional Airport, Wiley Ford, WV (small planes)

Dulles International Airport (near Washington D.C. 2 hrs away)

Lodging:

Keyser Econolodge (304-788-0913) - clean, basic rooms, no pool (Keyser pool

is 3 min. away), lots of restaurants nearby, 5 min. from Suaree'''¹.

Candlewyck Inn (304-788- 6594) - billed as a Bed and Breakfast but more like

a really nice motel attached to one of the best restaurants in Keyser, 2 Min

walk from downtown Keyser, lots of restaurants nearby, 10 min. From

Suaree'''¹, about $65.00 a night.

Camping

Anyone wanting to is welcomed to camp at the Suaree¹. There¹s plenty of

land for doing so.

Restaurants (Keyser) - King City (Chinese), Stray Cat Cafe (Mexican/Steaks),

El Jineté (nice restaurant), The Royale (Diner), Taste of Home (Diner),

Dairy Queen, Burger King, Mc 's, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Denny¹s,

Castiglia¹s (good Italian food!), Pizza Outlet, Domino¹s Pizza, Fox¹s Pizza

(mediocre), and Subway.

Places of Interest:

Golf Courses - There are two 9 hole golf courses nearby. The Pines golf

course is a 1 min. walk from the Econolodge. The second Golf course is an 8

minute drive.

For those wanting to play something a little more cutting edge, Rocky Gap is

located 4 miles East of Cumberland, MD and features an 18 hole course

developed by Arnold Palmer. (25 - 30 min. From Keyser)

Keyser Pool - 3 minutes from the Econolodge

Fishing - Lots of good fishing.

An out of state license is $25.00 for 7 days (no shorter periods)

With regard to locations, close by (25 min.) is the South Branch of the

Potomac. which is known for it's great fishing. My Brother-in-Law Norman

said that if you like to catch small mouth bass, the South Branch is one of

the best places you'll ever fish (trust me, Norman knows).

On the South Branch, there is a place called the " trough " where the

mountains come down to the waters edge on both sides of the river. The

water is pretty deep yet still moves at a reasonable pace. My

Brother-in-law Bill has a camp on the trough. You are allowed to keep any

fish caught in the trough.

About 10 miles below the trough the water is shallower and a little faster

moving, My other Brother-in Laws have a camp there. There it is ³catch and

release²

About 45 min. - 1 hr. away is the North Fork of the South Branch of the

Potomac. There the water is a faster moving and is more like a large

mountain stream with lots of rocks in the river bed. The North Fork is good

for trout fishing.

LaVale/Frostburg (land) - 30 min. away. Frostburg is the location of

Frostburg State University. Frostburg has some nice restaurants and 4 movie

screens. My personal favorite is Gandalf¹s as small restaurant/bar which

serves a variety of ethnic and vegetarian foods and usually has on stock

around 30 microbrews and imported beers.

LaVale is the fast food capital of the world and also has the Country Club

Mall, a medium sized mall with a nice variety of stores and an AMC cinema

with 6 screens.

Smoke Hole Caverns - 45 min. away. Smoke Hole Caverns has guided tours

through the caverns approximately every 1/2 hour. They also have a huge

souvenir shop with a fantastic assortment of junk. :-)

Dolly Sods - 5 min. From Smoke Hole Caverns is Dolly Sods an amazing

wilderness area! Dolly Sods is located on top of a mountain. Due to a fire

in 1904 and the high winds, much of the vegetation was never able to grow

back as it originally was. Much of the area resembles an arctic tundra and

many of the trees have branches only on one side due to the steady high

winds. Some really nice places to hike.

Seneca Rocks - 1 hour away. 15 min. From Smoke Hole Caverns is Seneca

Rocks, a huge granite face and one of the premiere rock climbing centers on

the east coast. The view of the rocks is spectacular and for those not

wanting to climb up to the top by way of the rock face there is a trail to

top which comes around the back of the mountain. You can hike to the top or

rent horses.

Blackwater Falls - 1 hour away. Blackwater Falls is home to a very lovely

wilderness area with plenty of hiking trails and the absolutely beautiful

³Blackwater Falls².

Canaan Valley - 1 hour away. 15 min. from Blackwater Falls. Canaan Valley

is one of the few valleys on the east coast above 3000 feet. Particularly

enjoyable is the ski lift ride up to the top of the mountain. The Canaan

State Park has a pool and golf course.

Deep Creek Lake (land) - 45 minutes away. Deep Creek Lake is a 17 mile

long lake with a nice public beach, 2 or 3 different recreation centers with

miniature golf, bumper cars, batting cages, race cars, arcade games... Also

nice is riding the ski lift up and hiking around the trails. You can also

rent mountain bikes which they will load on the chair lift and you can ride

the trails on the top of the mountain.

Washington D.C. - 2/12 hrs away. A couple of nice restaurants

Directions:

From West of Keyser

Get on I-68 in MD.

Take 68 to the Greene st. exit in Cumberland.

Get on rt 220 S.

Take 220 S. to Keyser.

Stay on 220 S. through Keyser

You will pass a Mc , KFC...

About a mile past the Mc , note the Keyser Econolodge on the right.

Continue on past the SuperWalmart (if you can)

Go approximately a half mile past the Walmart.

Just past El Jineté Mexican Restaurant, make a left

Go a mile to a mile and a 1/4

Make left onto Hooker Hollow rd.

Take road to top of hill and start looking left.

From East of Keyser

Take I - 81 to Winchester

Take the Rt 37 bypass to Rt 50 W.

Go about 50 + miles on Rt. 50 W.

You will go through Capon Bridge, Romney, and Burlington (where I live)

about 8 miles past Burlington, you will go up a big hill/small mountain.

The road will go from two lanes to three.

At top of big hill/small mountain, veer right at Y. (you will see a

rather ramshackle Mom and Pop shop on the left. Auction house/Bar on right)

Go a mile to a mile and a 1/4

Make right onto Hooker Hollow rd.

Take road to top of hill and start looking left.

Note: if you don't make a right on Hooker Hollow rd. and continue

straight, you will come to the intersection w/ Rt 220. make a right go 1

mile to get to Econolodge (on left).

From North of Keyser

For those of you coming from the North, you can go either way.

Personally, I prefer going by way of Winchester. It seems to go faster

(it isn't) and it's a little more scenic. Also, sburg has a good

Italian Restaurant at exit 16 (Carlo Spinelli's Taste of Italy)

From South of Keyser

Your choice of route should be determined by whether you are East or West of
